WASHINGTON, D.C. – As news reports unfolded last week about the growing discontent among parents and students over Michelle Obama’s new school lunch menu, the problem seemingly provided a golden opportunity for the Romney campaign.

School lunches – whether home-packed or school-provided – is an issue millions of parents deal with everyday. And to have students coming home hungry or dissatisfied with what’s being offered is a problem.

This problem was created by federal bureaucrats (with a push from Mrs. Obama) who believe they know better than parents about what their kids should eat.  It’s a classic case of government overreach: the federal government dictating to schools and parents across the country. It has backfired royally.

To make matters worse, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack responded by saying students should have a snack if they’re hungry.  It’s a modern-day “Let them eat cake!” moment – if only it were healthy.

But as far as we can tell the Romney campaign has been silent on the issue.  We contacted them seeking comment. They offered nothing at all.

Surely Romney doesn’t believe these new school lunch standards are appropriate.

He could come out and promise to repeal the one-size-fits-all lunch standards. He could say, “This is an issue that should be left up to parents and local schools and not the federal government.” It would further underscore his argument that Big Government is not answer.

But alas, there’s only silence from the Romney camp. For a candidate who’s recently been slipping in the polls, he seems to be wasting a golden opportunity to latch on to an issue that resonates with millions of everyday Americans.
