BERKELEY, Calif. – The creators of a University of California Berkeley White Student Union Facebook page are receiving death threats, and their page was shut down, two days after getting started.

The University complained to Facebook about the “hostile and intimidating” group using the school’s trademark without authorization and it was removed Monday. The page initially went up Saturday, and follows similar pages already in place for about 30 other large American universities, ABC 7 reports.

“They declined an on-camera interview with ABC 7 News claiming they’ve received many death threats,” according to the site.

“It’s not a serious thing,” student Sarah Phan said. “It’s all for fun and poking fun at socioeconomic struggles that minorities face.”

The page’s description read:

We welcome students of European descent (and allies) to follow and contribute to the White Student Union at UC Berkeley. We are inspired by the new White Student Union at UCLA and hope our initiative will move our brothers and sisters across the country to do the same.

European-American students on college campuses face unique and immediate challenges that are ignored or even actively denied in today’s cultural climate. …

The page itself was to provide “a safe space to support and promote the interests of students of European descent at UC Berkeley!”

“We are now a minority at UC Berkeley (29%). We need a voice!” it read.

ABC 7 reports the 29 percent figure is accurate, and white students at Berkeley are the second largest racial group, behind Asians.

And while it’s unclear whether the White Student Union organizers actually plan to pursue an official student group, it’s obvious some students feel one is needed.

“I know when I first got here my first week on campus I saw the Latino business group, the Asian American business group, where is the white business group? I honestly asked that and someone says that’s Wall Street,” student Zack Bolz told the site.

Others called on Facebook or the University to ban the White Student Union page.

“People should be reporting the page and I’m sure UC Berkeley doesn’t want to be associated with a White Student Union,” said student Remy D’Agnillo.

Berkeley Diversity – the university’s division of equity and inclusion – don’t think the group should be equal or included at the school, or on Facebook. It issued a statement about the Berkeley White Student Union page on its Facebook page.

Over the weekend, the University became aware of a group on Facebook identifying itself as the White Student Union at UC Berkeley. The page is clearly intended to fuel conflict and provocation rather than to foster a serious and constructive dialogue among students about issues of race. This does not reflect the values of our campus community. We thank all of the students and community members who reached out to us and shared their voices in solidarity.

Upon review, it seems that this is the work of an outside group. More than 30 of such pages have been created around the country in the last week – which indicates that this page is a part of a national effort, and did not emanate from our campus. This is not a recognized organization on the UC Berkeley campus. We have alerted Facebook about the unauthorized and impermissible use of the University’s trademark and informed them that such sites violate their own terms of service, and hope it will soon be removed or disabled.

We understand and regret that this group’s method and message were experienced as hostile and intimidating to students of color on our campus. While UC Berkeley honors First Amendment rights, we do not endorse this attempt to create conflict and make light of the efforts of activists, locally and nationally, who have worked hard to hold us all accountable for providing a campus climate where every student is safe, welcomed and respected.

According to The College Fix, at least 33 similar White Student Union pages have appeared on Facebook for major U.S. universities over the last week or so, and they’re creating quite the controversy. The Washington Post highlighted the issue at the University of Illinois last week.

“These ‘White Student Union’ pages currently exist only as social media creations, and it is not clear whether they are created by students at their respective universities. It is also unclear if these groups plan to become actual student organizations on campus, although a North Carolina university page states they plan on holding ‘group meetings, info sessions, rallies, and protests on the UNC campus,’” The College Fix reports.

Many of the pages use very similar language, and descriptions.

“We affirm the dignity and ancestry of our proud people who have gifted the world with countless works of beauty, science, and wisdom, and are committed to promoting a dialogue and political resistance that will secure a future for our posterity and spirit. … At the same time, we do not wish to denigrate or harm any other group or ethnicity,” several read.

The numerous White Student Union pages also communicate with each other, and post articles critical of the Black Lives Matter movement and other race controversies on college campuses. Other articles posted focus on the European refugee crisis, political correctness or the White Student Union groups themselves.

At the University of California Berkeley, students are apparently so offended by the White Student Union they’ve organized a Nov. 30. rally to protest the idea of the group.

“This is clearly an outrage and a direct attack against PoC groups. I am in contact with various student groups including the BSU and BAMN, and we will try to get enough people to get this despicable page off of Facebook,” the protest’s event page states, according to The College Fix.

“Note that this event is not meant to incite a race war. We are simply expressing our view that the White Student Union at UC Berkeley is improperly using the seal, and that the group contains many comments deemed harmful to PoC. We do respect the rights of the people behind the UCB WSU group; however, the group as a whole is inappropriate and thus deserves the consequences.”

The College Fix reports there’s currently White Student Union pages for the following universities: UCLA, Stanford, UC Davis, Princeton, University of Missouri, UC Berkeley, California State University at Fullerton, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Penn State University, Florida International University, Ohio State University, University of North Carolina, University of Texas at Austin, UC Santa Barbara, University of Minnesota, Occidental College, LSU, Michigan State University, Washington State University, University of Central Florida, North Carolina State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Montana, Loyola University at Chicago, Rutgers, NYU, Portland State University, University of Illinois, University of British Columbia, University of Western Ontario.
