NEW YORK – There are hotspots of teacher radicalism in America. Milwaukee is one and Oakland, California ranks near the top, but New York City remains the trend-setter. That’s why an organization called the New York Collective of Radical Educators has such a strong contingency.

During the month of July, a NYCORE-affiliated group, New Teacher Underground, is hosting a series of weekly workshops for “newer teachers,” which will tackle such topics like “anti-racist pedagogy,” “resisting the deficit model,” and “identity in the classroom.”

The July 29 session is reserved for “queering the curriculum.”

Details are few, but it’s obvious the teachers involved in this seminar will not be promoting a “straight” curriculum – no pun intended. It seems like the goal is to teach young educators to alter the curriculum to fit the homosexual perspective.

We want to be careful here. We believe it’s important to teach children that all people have a right to live as they choose in America, and all should be treated with courtesy and respect.

But if “queering the curriculum” means forcing all students to view the world, and their studies, through a gay prism, we think they’re going way too far. By focusing so heavily on their idea of political correctness, teachers run the risk of losing sight of the fundamentals.

Schools exist to teach children how to read, write and think critically, so they can seek, explore and form their own viewpoints. We don’t send kids to school to learn to think like the most liberal of their teachers.

But if previous examples are any indication, “queering” the material that New York City students are exposed to won’t be anything new.

Consider this from gay activists in New York City:

“This spring, beginning February 4, the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS), The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History, and The Hetrick Martin Institute will host a series of workshops addressing queer pedagogies and culture in the classroom. Seminar in the City: Queering the Curriculum will take place over the course of four Saturdays at the Urban Justice Center in downtown Manhattan.

“This past summer, queer people and our allies cheered the California State Legislature’s requirement to include the contributions of LGBTQ people to history in social studies textbooks and in-class curriculum. While California’s legislation represents an unqualified first, teachers in New York City—including teachers at Harvey Milk High School—and across the country have already experimented with introducing queer pedagogies in primary, intermediate, and secondary school classrooms. These and other strategies will be addressed in the CLAGS spring seminar series.”

These so-called educators are nothing more than political activists attempting to indoctrinate impressionable youngsters into their radical school of thought. Parents need to know this is happening, and to speak up if they find it objectionable.

Schools should stick to the three R’s. Families should provide the moral compass.
