TACOMA, Wash. – A Tacoma teacher was arrested Thursday on allegations of child rape and communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.

Meredith Claire Powell, a 24-year-old math teacher at Lincoln High School, was booked into the Pierce County Jail Thursday afternoon, reports KIROTV.

The Tacoma Police Department arrested Powell after the school district received an anonymous tip regarding accusations of sexual activity with students at Lincoln High School.

The teacher is facing two counts of third degree child rape and one count of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.

School Spokesman Dan Voelpel said the teacher was immediately placed on unpaid leave, according to the report.

Powell was first hired by the Tacoma Public School district in the fall of 2012.

Special education teacher arrested

A special education teacher in Huntsville, Alabama, is being charged with second-degree sodomy of a minor.

Mamon Edwards, 47, a teacher at Chapman Middle School, was arrested and posted bond late last week.

Court documents show that Edwards is accused of performing a sex act with a mentally handicapped boy between 12 and 16 years old last April, reports WAAY.

Edwards has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 12 and school officials say he is currently not allowed on school property.
