WASHINGTON, D.C. – School choice advocates and supportive lawmakers held a rally Tuesday at Capitol Hill, where the parents group PublicSchoolOptions.org recognized three members of Congress as Champions of School Choice.

The school choice group delivered small trophies to South Carolina’s Sen. Tim Scott, and Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita, both from Indiana.

“The truth is, in America, you already have school choice, if you can afford it,” Messer said, speaking of affluent families that live in top-notch public school districts, or that can afford private school.

“The only real question is, as a country, what are we going to do for everybody else?” he questioned, according to the Washington Examiner.

The men were recognized in part because of their responsiveness to parental demand for school choice options in the form of legislation introduced this year.

“They recognize that parents need options and they trust parents,” PublicSchoolOptions.org President Tillie Elvrum told the news site. “They know that nobody knows a child and what their academic needs are better than a parent.”

“I know how it is being a young kid growing up in a single parent household, living in poverty and drifting in the wrong direction … and yet if you’re in the wrong zip code, you do not have the options of other zip codes,” Scott told parents at Tuesday’s rally.

“My Mother did not have the options for schools. That’s why I have always said that when you give parents options, when you give them choice, kids have a better chance,” he said to howls in the crowd as he waived an “I Trust Parents” banner.

“I trust parents to make the right choice for their kids, because no one loves a child like their parents,” he said.

Rokita issued a statement to the Examiner thanking parents for supporting The Student Success Act, a bill that would give states more control over education and promote charter schools.

“I set out four years ago to fight for a commonsense education bill that took Washington out of the way and restored transparency, choice, and flexibility back to our schools,” Rokita said. “Every student deserves an effective teacher, an engaging classroom, and a quality education. [The Student Success Act] is a step in the right direction and I thank all of the parents and supporters that came to D.C. today to ensure their voices are heard.”

Others at the event included Center for Education Reform President Kara Kerwin and reform advocate and attorney Kevin Chavous, who spoke about the growing momentum of the school choice movement.

“Parents are driving this revolution in education,” Chavous said. “And you know why they’re driving it? Because they’re sick and tired … of being sick and tired.”
