SAN DIEGO – An online video of a student at Eastlake High School smoking out of a bong and pipe in class is sparking outrage, though officials have released few details on the incident.

CBS 8 broadcast a video Monday of what appears to be an Eastlake High School student smoking something out of a homemade bong and glass pipe in class as his classmates recorded the student with their cell phones.

Both contraptions are typically used for smoking marijuana, but it’s impossible to tell in the video what, if anything, the student was smoking.

“I would like to inform you that there was an incident that happened in one of my classes on April 14, 2017. (Assistant Principal Manuel) Narvaza is currently handling the situation,” an unidentified teacher wrote in a letter to parents. “Mr. Narvaza has spoken to me and have come up with a plan such that incidents like these do not happen again. Starting Tuesday, April 25, new classroom rules will be implemented. … I am working very closely with Mr. Narvaza because nothing is more important to us than the safety of your child.”

The statement did not reveal any details about the incident, such as where the teacher was, any evidence recovered, or what punishment the student may face. A statement from district officials was equally vague.

“Eastlake High School and the Sweetwater Union High School were made aware of this incident and the situation was addressed immediately. Parents directly affected by this were notified and disciplinary action has been taken as appropriate,” officials told CBS 8. “Student safety and wellbeing is of our utmost concern and we ask all parents and students to work with us in continuing to make our schools a safe and healthy environment.”

Many who commented on the incident online were not impressed.

“Uhhh, where the hell was the teacher?” Meli Gz posted to Facebook. “Please tell me why this teacher couldn’t smell something burning in his classroom, or why these kids were all focused on the one kid smoking versus on the lesson that supposed to be taught.”

“Disgusting that this goes on in a public school classroom. We entrust our kids to these teachers and this garbage is allowed to happen,” Melinda Storgard wrote. “Where was the teacher?”

Others were not surprised.

“Uhh, kids have been smoking weed out of homemade things, at school, for decades,” Jake Culbertson posted.

“I sent to Eastlake it was always known as a school with a bunch of little rich spoiled brat stoners and drunk, crazy white girls who were very free spirited, if you know what I mean,” Andy Man added. “Nothing new here, carry on.”

“Nothing shocking here,” June Citizen wrote. “Learned from home, pretty good guess.”

“The media should not be shocked … they constantly talk up pot use,” she wrote.
