ST. ANSGAR, Iowa – A St. Ansgar High School student recently challenged 83-year-old Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley to a push-up contest, and the elderly statesman didn’t disappoint.

Grassley, known for visiting each of his state’s 99 counties every year, was visiting with students at the high school last Thursday when he took on a female senior in the show of stamina, quickly peeling off his suit jacket to pound out 19 push-ups on the gym floor, WALB reports.

A video of the interaction posted to Grassley’s Twitter account shows the student completed 10 push-ups before calling it quits.

Grassley hit 13 push-ups before a student in the stands declared “he wins.” The father of five and grandfather continued with another six push-ups for good measure.

“Wow,” one student marveled as others applauded his performance.

Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has served in the upper chamber since 1981. Prior to that, he represented Iowa in the House and served in the Iowa state legislature from 1959 to 1974.
