WEST ASHLEY, S.C. – Ten girls at South Carolina’s West Ashley High School face criminal charges after a brawl on campus Thursday that involved at least one teen dousing others with pepper spray.

West Ashley High School officials issued a “Code Yellow Lockdown” early Thursday morning after a girl fight broke out on campus that involved at least 10 students, WCBD reports.

The fight started in the school’s cafeteria, where one girl opened a can of pepper spray and doused her classmates, according to the Charleston Post and Courier.

“Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said all 10 juveniles involved are charged with disorderly conduct,” the news site reports. “The student suspected of using pepper spray is also charged with having a weapon on school property.”

West Ashley principal Lee Runyon told WCSC numerous students were exposed to the pepper spray and were treated by medical staff at the school.

None of the students were transported to the hospital, the Post and Courier reports.

Student Jeremiah Lamont posted what appears to be a video of the Thursday fight to Facebook around 2 p.m.

The roughly 2 minute clip shows an officer attempting to pull the girls away from each other in the cafeteria as dozens of students screamed and recorded the melee from atop the cafeteria tables.

The officer’s intervention, however, did little to stop the girls, several of which were pulled away only to rejoin the fight. One girl is pulled away by the officer, then appears to push him to the ground when he turned his attention to another student. The same girl is seen repeatedly kicking another girl on the ground near the officer.

Eventually, a male student, school staff, and another officer put an end to the fight, though at least one girl continued to resist well after the brawl stopped.

The fight prompted numerous comments online.

“Wtf is wrong with our youth?” Heather Halvorsen questioned. “Your lives are not THAT bad!”

“So sad,” Jeannie Benford Dobson added. “Waste of education tax dollars.”

“My child was affected by the pepper spray and I don’t find anything about this the least bit amusing because innocent people attempting to eat their breakfast at school this morning were affected by others who sought to have a ambush at school,” Stephanie Johnson wrote. “So sad.”

“Why are parents not teaching their children to be ladies and geltemen?” Rustalyn Rose questioned. “Classy, girls.”

“What the heck is wrong with these people?” Pamela Jolley wrote. “Don’t they know how to be decent? Parents need to be parents!”

Sandy Mizell posted that she believes the students should be “permanently expelled.”

School officials did not reveal what, if any, punishment the girls will face at school.

They were all released to their parents.
