OREM, Utah – Highways have HOV lanes. Now schools are adopting texting lanes.

Utah Valley University is implementing a staircase lane system that will allow pedestrians to travel three speeds: run, walk or text.

A spokesperson for the school tells Fox 5 the idea “is meant to enhance the new student life and wellness center on campus.”

“You have 18-24 year olds walking down the hall with smartphones, you’re almost bound to run into someone somewhere; it’s something we’re dealing with in this day and age,” Matt Bambrough, the creative director at UVU, tells Fusion. “But (preventing collisions) isn’t the reason we did it—we did it to engage the students. It’s meant to be there for people to look at and enjoy.”

Students say they understand the concept, but they’re not sure what it will actually accomplish. They claim it’s not so much human-to-human collisions, but rather human-on-inanimate-objects.

“They walk into barriers—chairs on the side of the hallway, or railings,” Robbie Poffenberger, assistant news editor at the student newspaper, says. “I’m sure they’re fairly embarrassed.”
