President Donald Trump thinks schools could still re-open to finish the 2019-2020 school year, though many states have already canceled in-person classes for the year.

Trump made the comments at a daily coronavirus press conference on Monday, Fox News reports.

“I think you’ll see a lot of schools open up, even for a short period of time,” Trump said. “I think it would be a good thing.”

The president noted that the young haven’t been impacted by the deadly virus as much as other age groups.

Trump discussed the issue with governors during a Monday teleconference call, urging them move ahead.

“Some of you might start thinking about school openings, because a lot of people are wanting to have school openings. It’s not a big subject, young children have done very well in this disaster that we’ve all gone through,” Trump said, according to CNN.

“So a lot of people are thinking about the school openings. And I think it’s something, Mike (Pence), they can seriously consider and maybe get going on it.”

The push to re-open schools defies plans in 43 states to suspend in-person classes through the current academic year. States including California, Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, South Dakota and Tennessee are urging local schools to continue distance learning, CNN reports.

The Associated Press reports none of the governors on the call with Trump responded to his suggestion to reopen schools this year.

The call with governors involved mostly Trump, Pence and senior advisor Jared Kushner discussing a new “testing blueprint” and “testing overview” the lays out a plan to launch, scale and support reopening the country after weeks in lockdown.

The blueprint states “testing plans and rapid response programs will be federally supported, state managed and locally executed.”

The details fit into a broader phased plan put out by the White House on April 16 that details ways states can roll back social distancing restrictions over three stages, ABC News reports.

“The first phase called for some businesses to reopen, while the federal government did not recommend states reopen schools until the second phase,” according to the news site.

Trump said at the time that “schools are going to be open sooner rather than later.”

“I’ve spoken to some governors who were already talking about thinking about getting the schools open,” he said two weeks ago.

While the vast majority of states have already decided to call it quits on 2019-2020, some of the states hit hardest by the virus, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, have not made a determination, Fox News reports.
