MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Raleigh-Egypt High School teacher Walter McCrimmon recently learned the hard way that pimping ain’t easy.

McCrimmon, 44, was arrested on eight counts of promoting prostitution, as well as charges of unlawful sale of alcohol and money laundering, after a three month investigation by the Memphis Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit revealed he’s a teacher by day, and allegedly a pimp by night, My Fox Memphis reports.

“It’s a shame, it’s a shame,” Carl Piggie, who lives near Raleigh-Egypt, told the news site. “(If) you can’t go to school and trust a teacher, who can you trust?”

McCrimmon was arrested when authorities shut down his Memphis nightclub, Walt’s Place, over the weekend. Undercover officers allegedly made eight separate prostitution transactions there, including deals organized by McCrimmon himself, before they raided the Parkway Village establishment Saturday, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Walter McCrimmon profilePolice allege the club charged patrons a $20 “membership fee” for events that featured strippers and other activities, but did not have a compensated dance permit. Walt’s Place also served booze without a liquor license and provided a VIP room for $50 sex sessions, police said.

“We are very concerned about the severity of these allegations,” the Shelby County school district wrote in a prepared statement shortly after McCrimmon’s arrest, according to News Channel 3. “At this point, the teacher has been suspended without pay.”

McCrimmon has since resigned from his teaching position, My Fox Memphis reports.

Walt’s “private club,” ironically, is located in the same complex as several storefront churches, and patrons were happy to see it shut down.

“That’s demonic activity … so I think it’s an answer to prayer that it was shut down,” Ivy Anderson, a local churchgoer told News Channel 3. “It’s closed and needs to stay closed.”

Anderson was shocked to learn McCrimmon was a teacher at Raleigh-Egypt High School.

“Are you serious?” she questioned. “There’s something mixed up in his mind.”

Parents were equally concerned.

“What kind of positive influence or positive role model are you that you’re going to be out here doing something illegal, promoting sex, making some woman – somebody’s mother, daughter, child – have sex that’s illegal for money, when you’re teaching children,” high school parent Janelle Thomas said.

District officials told My Fox Memphis McCrimmon is a certified history teacher who has taught in the school system since 2003.

It’s unclear how long he owned and operated Walt’s Place, but some local residents think school officials should have known about his off-campus endeavors.

“I think they should have caught him, if they’re doing their job,” James Brown, a resident who lives near the high school, told the site.

“That’s what they’re paid to do,” he said. “You go to your job, you’re supposed to do your job thoroughly. You’re supposed to check on backgrounds, check where he comes from.”

Beyond the criminal charges, police shut down Walt’s Place as a public nuisance. An Environmental Court judge is expected to review that nuisance complaint on Wednesday to determine if the business with be permanently shuttered.

School officials stressed that none of McCrimmon’s allegedly illegal activities occurred on school property.
