JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three employees of Jacksonville’s Westside High School could face criminal charges for alleged sexual relationships from students after a co-worker outed all three.

Westside dean of students Ernest Timmons, teacher Kenneth Anderson, Jr., and part-time coach and Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office corrections officer Clarence Thomas were removed from the school immediately after a former teacher went to school officials with allegations of sexual misconduct in April, News4Jax.com reports.

Duval County Public Schools issued a preliminary report about its investigation into the alleged misconduct yesterday, according to The Florida Times-Union.

“Ashley Thomas, now working in an Orlando-area suburban district, told another teacher who then told an assistant principal about the misconduct,” the news site reports.

Ashley Thomas apparently learned of the educators’ misdeeds through an 11th grade girl at the school who confided in her. The student said she had been in a sexual relationship with Anderson, and provided information about the other two. Ashley Thomas told investigators Timmons’ alleged victim, a female senior, later called her because she felt bad when she learned Thomas previously dated Timmons.

Timmons, 32, had been in a sexual relationship with the female student for two years, beginning when she was a minor and progressing through her 18th birthday, the teen alleged. One school employee told investigators she confronted Timmons about the rumors, and he “never denied the relationship,” New4Jax reports.

When questioned by investigators, Timmons denied any involvement with his alleged victim, or any student.

“He does not take the rumors and matters like this lightly, but said he’s not losing any sleep over it. He knows his character and the hard work he puts in every day,” an investigator wrote in the district report. “Mr. Timmons did not provide a reasonable explanation as to why he did not report the rumors to the principal.”

Timmons told investigators he’s never kissed or been kissed by a student, and has never had sex with a student. The school investigator noticed that Timmons was very emotional and crying after the interview, and wrote that he later called back and requested to talk off the record, “man to man,” but the investigator declined, according to the news site.

He resigned June 27 citing personal reasons, the Times-Union reports.

Anderson, 27, was hired as a coach last June and as a teacher last August, before allegedly having sex with a student on two occasions starting in January. The alleged victim told investigators she was frequently late for school and Anderson would excuse her tardiness. On one occasion Anderson allegedly witnessed the student dancing in class and asked her if she would dance for him, and provided his cell phone number.

The two texted and sexted and eventually had sex in January after a sports banquet and again in February, both times in his car at a park, according to the Times-Union.

The alleged victim’s parents eventually caught on and had a conference call with Anderson, who the victim said admitted to the relationship. The girl’s father forgave Anderson, and told an investigator he won’t pursue criminal charges, but the alleged victim’s mother “does not share his sentiments,” according to the district report cited by News4Jax.

Anderson also resigned citing personal reasons.

Clarence Thomas, a part-time football coach at Westside and corrections officer for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, started a relationship with his alleged victim during the fall 2014 football season, when the girl worked as the football team manager.

Thomas, who was hired in April 2014, told investigators the relationship started in October or November of last year, and the two had sex about 20 times.

“He originally believed she was 18 years old, but found out in November she was only 17 years old,” the school report states. “He feels he made a ‘bad choice.’”

The alleged victim initially denied the relationship and coaxed friends into writing letters of support for Thomas, but those friends later redacted their statement, according to the Times-Union.

The girl later admitted to the relationship and said the only reason it ended was because of the investigation.

The school district fired Thomas May 13, though he’s still employed by the sheriff’s office and is assigned to desk duty as the investigation continues.

School officials are now working to determine which school employees knew of the relationships and failed to report them, superintendent Nikolai Vitti told the Times-Union.

“There are a couple of examples in the report where individuals mentioned that they thought there had been inappropriate relationships and it looks as if they didn’t report it,” he said.

“Is there a problem at Westside? The investigation would have to be complete for me to be able to answer that. But there were signs, like students staying in the classroom late of the school day, things like that, that could raise some flags. Ultimately, those are the issues we’re going to look deeper at.”

Meanwhile, the state attorney’s office, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and the Department of Child and Family Services also opened investigations about the alleged sexual abuse, though no criminal charges have been filed yet, according to the site.
