FORT WORTH, Texas – Police arrested first-year teacher Cary Joseph Heath at Permenter Middle School Monday and charged him with killing his neighbor and another man at a party Saturday night.

Fort Worth Police allege Heath attended a Halloween party at his neighbor’s house Saturday night and carried on cordial conversations with the neighbor and others before leaving the party after a few minutes.

Witnesses told police Heath later returned to the neighbor’s house with a rifle and rang the doorbell. When the neighbor answered the door, Heath allegedly hit the man with the butt of the gun, then shot and killed him and another man minutes later, Fox 4 reports.

“My wife woke me up and said someone is banging on the door,” Jordan Milner, who lives across the street from the home, told NBC DFW. “Turns out what my wife heard were gunshots. … From the looks of it, due to the shell casings, he unloaded the whole clip and killed two of the people who lived next door.”

Milner said Heath went to the same church as his family, and the neighbor was a longtime resident of the neighborhood.

“They were nice, but he kind of kept to himself,” Milner said.

According to the arrest affidavit, Heath pointed the gun at a witness during the ordeal and asked “Do you have a problem?” when he yelled for Heath to stop the shooting.

The affidavit states Heath returned home after the shooting to hold his baby and allegedly told his wife “This is the last time I’ll see the baby. I killed two people,” Fox 4 reports.

“It’s very scary because you have all the kids over there and you don’t want any kids to get hurt whether they’re yours or anybody else’s,” Permenter parent Teresa Moreno told the news site. “Because they should be safe over there just to go to school and get their education and come home.”

Heath served in the U.S Air Force for 13 years before he was hired as an eighth grade science teacher at Permenter this year, Fox 4 reports.

He was charged with capital murder on Monday and jailed on a $1 million bond. Police have not revealed a possible motive for the shooting.

“That is unusual for this neighborhood We don’t have violent crime issues at this part of Fort Worth, so I can understand how neighbors in this area would be concerned,” Fort Worth Police Sgt. Marc Povero told CBS DFW.

Milner agreed that the shooting was a shock for the quiet neighborhood.

“Nothing like that ever happens around here,” he said. “I mean, that’s why we live here. It’s safe.”

A spokesperson Heath’s employer, the Cedar Hill Independent School District, told NBC DFW Heath was placed on paid administrative leave upon his arrest.
