FRISCO, Texas – Some parents and residents of a small Texas community are raising issues with the name of a new high school, and want school leaders to consider another option.

Parents in Frisco, Texas – which once was named Lebanon – are upset because district officials want to name a new high school after the community that predated the town – Lebanon High School, the Dallas Morning News reports.

Last month, parent Liffey Skender pleaded with the school board to select another name, such as Freedom High School, because Lebanon dredges up images of the war-torn country.

“The Frisco historical reference is nice. But the present-tense name of a country that was in the news all the time with reference of war and battle ground was always what was on my mind when I would say the name Lebanon,” Skender said, according to the news site.

“The word Lebanon still reminds me of all the sad and turmoil that goes on in the Middle East.”

Skender told the board she’s received calls and emails from over 100 others who oppose the name, and presented board members with some of the emails, according to the Washington Post.

Skender and her supporters also went on the local NBC TV affiliate in an effort to pressure local officials to reconsider.

“For a high school name, it doesn’t fit this community,” parent Robert Mays said.

“All we are asking for is a voice, to be heard and have an open mind,” Skender told NBC.

School officials agree, in a sense, because Frisco already has a Liberty High School, with the initials LHS. Because Lebanon High School would result in the same initials, district leaders said they may add a word like “community,” “central,” or “memorial” to the name, but they don’t plan on changing it entirely, NBC reports.

School officials said the name was chosen by a committee to honor the area’s heritage. A community of farmers settled nearby and established the town Lebanon and Lebanon School, which operated until 1947, according to the Dallas News.

The town’s name was eventually changed to Frisco, but Lebanon is still referenced by local churches and roads.

Lebanon High School will be the town’s ninth high school, and is expected to open in 2016.

Many who commented on the Washington Post site ridiculed the Texas parents as ignorant bumpkins.

“The average Texan has the erudition and perspicacity of a (sic) armadillo squashed in the road,” Issy Wise posted.

“There’s no limit on ignorance in Texas,” NonParanoidDelusional wrote. “The cattle that used to be driven through this town have the same intelligence and herd mentality as these people in Texas.”

Most of the commenters on the local NBC site also believed the issue with the name is overblown.

“I think it’s a good name for it. I grew up around the area and Lebanon is a major part of Frisco,” Hector H. Arana posted. “I would keep the name and I believe the students wouldn’t mind the name either.”

“Not a thing in the world wrong with ‘Lebanon,’” Melissa Russo wrote. “This parent group sounds somewhat fanatical.”

Linda Loudermilk thought “these people are absolutely eaten up with stupidity.”
