WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Federation of Teachers is championing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s call for campaign finance reform because “unaccountable sums of money are perverting outcomes in our elections.”

AFT President Rhonda “Randi” Weingarten issued a press release Tuesday that parrots a Clinton campaign video released the same day condemning the Supreme Court case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, a 2010 ruling that prohibited the government from restricting independent political expenditures by nonprofits.

“What a lot of people don’t realize is that Citizens United started from a conservative organization that wanted to bring down Hillary Clinton’s candidacy because they didn’t like who she is, and they don’t like what she stands for,” Hillary for America spokeswoman Kristina Schake narrated in a video posted to YouTube yesterday.

“Citizens United changed our democracy at its core. The most powerful, the most connected American corporations and special interests had the right to spend as much money as they wanted to to get elected candidates that they thought best represented their agenda,” Schake said.

Weingarten backed Clinton’s call to overhaul Citizens United – through a constitutional amendment, if necessary – in a prepared statement timed to coincide with Clinton’s campaign.

“When a handful of wealthy Americans are allowed to buy and sell an election, our democracy fails its most important mission: to work for all our people. Unlimited and unaccountable sums of money are perverting outcomes in our elections and making our economy work for only a select few. It’s a real and present danger to the hopes and aspirations of millions of everyday Americans,” Weingarten wrote.

“The balance of power in America is out of whack. Hillary Clinton has a bold plan to rewrite the rules so that every voter matters and every vote counts,” the statement continues. “We’re excited to work with Hillary to make the United States a democracy that is truly – as I taught my civics students every year – ‘of the people, by the people, for the people.’”

The AFT represents 1.6 million pre-K through 12th-grade teachers, paraprofessionals and other school-related personnel, according to the release.

But Clinton’s and Weingarten’s statements about democracy, and Citizens United, couldn’t be more ironic.

The AFT, along with the nation’s largest teachers union – the National Education Association, are among the top political spenders in the nation and have used the Citizens United ruling to pump millions of dollars to democratic candidates.

The unions claim members come from all political backgrounds, but the AFT’s political spending shows union bosses are only interested in supporting liberal politicians and causes – “perverting outcomes in our elections.”

A handy chart on OpenSecrets.org illustrates that Citizens United boosted the AFT’s spending on politics in a big way – going from no soft spending in the 2008 elections to $2.4 million in 2010, $6.2 million in 2012, and $2.9 million in 2014.

In total, the AFT spent a total of $19,714,548, with a measly $26,000 going to Republicans and the rest to Democrats.

In other words, the AFT is among the country’s biggest special interests taking advantage of the Citizens United ruling.

The AFT also endorsed Clinton for the 2016 presidential election without seriously consulting its members. The union claimed it polled .04 percent of its members over the decision, but activist teachers quickly spoke out against the move, EAGnews reports.

“The story isn’t (Weingarten) & (AFT’s) endorsement of (Hillary Clinton.) The story is all the amazing teachers saying to freaking way!!!” one teacher posted to Twitter.

“This endorsement has definitely mobilized support for (presidential candidate Bernie Sanders)!” Tara Molloy-Grocki responded.

The AFT’s early endorsement of Clinton – more than a year before the 2016 election – prompted a deluge of criticism online, as well as an informal poll on Facebook that showed an overwhelming majority of union members prefer Bernie Sanders, or someone besides Clinton, Common Dreams reported in July.

Teacher Minnsanity tweeted that the “AFT tried to shove (No Child Left Behind), common core, (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing) and now Hillary on us – we ain’t buying.”

It’s a “sad day when political expediency trumps legitimate representation of members’ real priorities,” Minnsanity tweeted

“Weingarten has this thing about giving false information via polls … It’s scary,” another teacher added on Facebook.

Those teachers obviously believe the AFT and Weingarten should take a long look in the mirror when assessing the “real and present danger to the hopes and aspirations of millions of everyday Americans.”
