SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The National Education Association is touting efforts from its affiliates to pressure state universities into declaring campuses as “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants.

NEAToday, the nationwide teachers union’s news publication, is featuring the NEA-affiliated California Faculty Association’s move to demand all of California State University’s 23 campuses declare themselves “sanctuaries” – otherwise known as “safe zones” for illegal immigrants.

In a resolution adopted by the CFA in March, the union “stands in solidarity with all our students and families in the spirit of inclusion and justice.”

NEAToday points out that the CFA resolution objects to the federal government’s crack down on illegal immigration, and similar measures from state lawmakers like California’s Rep. Duncan Hunter, who introduced the “No Funding for Sanctuary Campuses Act” in December to cut federal funds from schools that violate immigration laws.

“Meanwhile, Republican state legislators are gearing up to punish state universities that would seek to protect all students, too,” the liberally biased union site reports. “In response to Texas State University students who petitioned their administrators to make their campus a ‘sanctuary,’ Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted that ‘Texas will not tolerate sanctuary campuses or cities. I will cut funding for any state campus if it establishes sanctuary status.’”

The NEA “news” story is rife with loaded language that’s clearly designed to lure readers to the union’s wildly liberal perspective.

“During his campaign, President Trump called the federal immigration policy known as DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, which temporarily protects some students from deportation, an ‘illegal amnesty.’ Since his election, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have swept into neighborhoods and wreaked chaos in the lives of immigrant families,” according to the NEA.

“In November, the Cal State system affirmed its commitment to fostering a ‘safe and welcoming’ community, and vowed not to help federal immigration officials ‘unless required by law.’ But so far, their efforts have fallen short of creating the “safe zones” that students deserve.”

The NEA then points to the CFA’s resolution on creating a “safe and inviting” campus, which “lays out the proper conduct for university officials.”

The union believes universities should ban campus police from assisting Immigration and Customs Enforcement in any way, including by collecting or providing information about illegal immigrants at schools.

Instead, school officials should “refuse immigration agents access to campus, unless provided with a warrant signed by a state or federal judge that specifies the name of the person under arrest, as well as written authority from ICE.”

The union also believes universities should “provide legal support to immigrant students and families,” as well as “mental-health counseling by culturally competent professionals.”

The union wants schools to host “Know Your Rights” sessions for illegals in multiple languages, “offer housing for students who can’t return home,” and make sure that illegal immigrants get all of the financial aid possible.

All of those things would be great for the NEA and its members, creating more work for the state’s unionized public school workforce, but would also put large sums of federal funding in jeopardy after repeated warnings about repercussions from the Trump administration for “sanctuaries.”
