NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans police are investigating an armed robbery at a local school, the latest in a string of high-profile armed robberies that have also targeted bars and restaurants in the Uptown area.

The New Orleans Police Department told NOLA.com an armed gunman approached a female teacher as she entered Success Preparatory Academy around 7 a.m. Wednesday and initially attempted to rob her outside the school, before forcing her inside. Once in the building the man robbed the teacher and another female teacher.

Students did not have class Wednesday and the teachers were there for professional development training, according to the news site.

“The teachers are very traumatized, and understandably so,” NOPD superintendent Michael Harrison told reporters. “They’re going to get better, but they need help.”

“They can be reassured we’re going to work to keep them safe,” he said.

WNGO reports the victims of the attack included a sixth-grade teacher and a school administrator.

Inside the school, “the suspect grabbed the sixth grade teacher by the hair, demanded she give up her valuables,” according to the news site. “When she said they were upstairs, he pulled her up the stairs. That’s when he saw the other teacher, robbed her as well and ran off. A custodian heard the ruckus and called police immediately.”

Police searched the school and could not locate the suspect. The women, as well as other staff, continued their day as officers reviewed video footage from the school and neighborhood, WNGO reports.

“Anyone who chooses to commit this type of violent behavior – we’re not going to accept it. We’re going to pursue every single lead that we get and we’re going to turn the earth upside down until we find and catch these people,” Harrison said.

“We’re not going to stand for it, we’re going to make sure our city is safe, whatever it is we have to do.”

School officials issued a statement about the robbery.

“Teachers of New Orleans do one of the hardest and most important jobs we have in this city – preparing our children to be productive and engaged citizens, Recovery School District Superintendent Patrick Dobard wrote Wednesday. “Schools should always be a safe place for our children and teachers and it is our duty as a community to ensure this is so.”

The same day as the Success Academy attack, NOPD announced detectives believe a 16-year-old arrested last week is allegedly responsible for six Uptown armed robberies.

“Police previously accused the teenager of a month-long crime spree involving five separate armed robberies of six total victims,” NOLA.com reports. “He was arrested Friday night after police chased his bicycle to Chestnut and General Pershing streets.”

Police searched the boy’s home, where they allegedly found five cell phones, clothes described by a victim, as well as a rifle believed to have been used in the alleged crimes.

Harrison told the media Tuesday authorities are seeking to charge him as an adult.

That suspect was in custody when the Success Academy attack occurred.
