HOUSTON – At Garden Oaks Montessori School, policy dictates that teachers cannot say “good morning, boys and girls” because those words don’t convey a “sense of equality and togetherness.” Instead, the staff uses broader “gender inclusive” language, such as “good morning, class” or “good morning, everyone.”

According to a CNN report, Garden Oaks Montessori staff has been trained to support children who deviate from gender norms, “whether it’s a boy in girls’ clothes or a child who was born a girl and wants to be called a boy.”

School Principal Lindsey Pollock says, “Diversity is a good thing. We all benefit from the unique characteristics that we all have.”

Pollock says the schools’ goal is to “build a culture of inclusivity and understanding and a mindset of being welcoming to everyone.”

The school receives its training from Human Rights Campaign’s Welcoming Schools initiative, which suggests 6 steps for creating a ‘gender inclusive school community.’

Steps include not separating children by gender, using ‘inclusive language’, and featuring books, posters and workbooks that show “transgender and gender expansive children” and “men and women in nonstereotypical roles of all races and sexual orientation.”

Human Rights Campaign is a civil rights organization that advocates for the legalization of same-sex marriages and for comprehensive sex education for children of all ages.

Several schools across the country have adopting similar policies to those of Garden Oaks. Advocates say they support gender inclusive schools because research shows that enforcing fixed ideas of what it means to be a boy or a girl has negative effects on children.

Human Rights Campaign and other supporters of gender education and sensitivity training often point to the National School Climate Survey as a basis for their cause, stating that, according to the survey, transgender and gender nonconforming children are frequent targets of bullying.

But is this so-called research trustworthy?

The National School Climate Survey is conducted by GLSEN, which was founded and is still led by former Obama ‘Safe Schools Czar’, Kevin Jennings, who once admitted that the “safety” rhetoric of his organization is just a political device to promote homosexuality.

Shortly after Jennings’ appointment by President Obama in 2009, several conservative organizations and 53 lawmakers called for his firing, claiming that Jennings had, “for more than twenty years, almost exclusively focused on promoting the homosexual agenda.”

Not only has Jennings, in fact, promoted homosexuality for many years, but he has done so in extremely controversial ways.

For example, Jennings endorsed and wrote the forward for a book titled Queering of Elementary Education: Advancing the Dialogue about Sexualities and Schooling.

According to Family Research Council, the book included an essay written by a lesbian mother who boasted of teaching her seven-year-old daughter to masturbate and declared that “’queerly raised’ children are agents” using “strategies of adaptation, negotiation, resistance and subversion.”

Human Rights Campaign and GLSEN partner closely with Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to promote gender inclusive schools.

According to Family Research Council, who has done extensive research into all three of these organizations, SPLC “has expanded the understanding of bullying to include any communication or treatment that does not celebrate and positively affirm an LGBT student’s gender identity.” In fact, as FRC reports, “schools with policies that require simple neutrality on contentious subjects such as same-sex marriage have been targeted by SPLC as not “inclusive” enough of LGBT students.”

According to GLSEN, it’s National School Climate Survey is the “only study to consistently document the school experiences of LGBT students nationally.” Therefore, it is the only ‘research’ that exists to support claims of a need for comprehensive sexuality education and gender sensitivity training in schools.

As reported by CNN, at least 160 cities and have passed laws prohibiting gender identity discrimination and Wisconsin’s Madison Metropolitan School District is one of many districts issuing guidance to administrators on how to create a welcoming environment for transgender and gender nonconforming students.
