DUBLIN, Ga. – A Georgia teacher who allegedly badmouthed President Barack Obama as “anti-Christian” will no longer teach students at Dublin Middle School.

Veteran teacher Nancy Perry allegedly told students at the school in March that Obama is not a Christian and Christians shouldn’t support him, although she has denied those comments, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

Parents and the NAACP complained about the alleged comments, and Dublin City Schools superintendent Chuck Ledbetter announced Tuesday that Perry was removed from the classroom pending her retirement at the end of the school year.

Ledbetter also apologized to the public for the teacher’s alleged comments.

“It is not the place of teachers to attempt to persuade students about religious or political beliefs,” Ledbetter said, according to the AJC. “In doing so, the teacher was wrong and that has been communicated to her … Just as importantly, we are communicating this message to all staff of the school district.”

District officials also took aim at Perry’s husband, school board member and former conservative radio host Bill Perry. Following parental complaints about Nancy Perry’s alleged comments, a parent-teacher meeting was set up to discuss the issue with parents, and Bill Perry joined in on the meeting, according to the Associated Press.

“Parents saw (Bill Perry’s presence) as a form of intimidation,” the AJC reports. “Ledbetter has ordered all school principals to call his office immediately when a school board member tries to get involved in day-to-day activities. NAACP officials had threatened to involve the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, an accrediting agency, arguing that Bill Perry was ‘micromanaging’ the schools.”

“An individual board member should not participate in a parent/teacher or parent/principal conference nor should an individual board member in any way attempt to involve himself in a parental concern or a personnel matter at the school level,” Ledbetter said, according to the news site.

“Again, this has been communicated directly to the board member by the board of education and made clear to the principals in our schools that this is not to be allowed.”

In other words, school board members are elected by taxpayers to lead the school district, but cannot engage directly with parents or school staff in Dublin schools.

Ledbetter announced Nancy Perry’s retirement at a board meeting Tuesday morning, where the father of a student who originally complained about the teacher’s alleged comments also spoke to the community, the AP reports.

“We’ve lost loved one in the community because a line was drawn,” parent Jimmie Scott said. “Either you were for my son or you were for the teacher.”

The ACJ reports that President Obama identifies as a Christian, but many Americans don’t buy it.

According to the news site:

“Critics have argued that because of his unique background he is anti-Christian, an atheist or, most commonly, he secretly practices Islam.

“Those claims have only intensified since he was elected president in 2008.

“According to the Pew Research Center, as recently as 2012, 17 percent of voters identified Obama as a Muslim. That view was especially prevalent among conservative Republicans: 34 percent of them identified him as a Muslim.”
