HOUSTON – A Houston middle school teacher who was impregnated by her student returned to court on Wednesday over her repeated bond violations as she awaits trial on a charge of sexual abuse of a child.

Stovall Middle School teacher Alexandria Vera, 24, was arrested over the summer for an alleged sexual relationship with a student who was 13 years old at the time. Prosecutors contend Vera had sex with the student at least twice between Sept. 30, 2015 and Jan. 30 after meeting the teen at a summer school session, KPRC reports.

The child allegedly contacted his teacher on Instagram and the two eventually exchanged phone numbers and spent time together. Vera allegedly told police the two first made out in her car after she picked the boy up at his home, then had sex with the student at his home while his parents were gone the next day, according to police.

Vera allegedly told officers the boy’s parents were aware of their relationship, allowed him to stay over at her house regularly to have sex, and supported the couple when she revealed she was pregnant with the student’s child in January. Vera told police she was invited to family gatherings and treated as the boy’s girlfriend, and the family was excited about the pregnancy, which she terminated after Child Protective Services began asking questions at the school in February, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Vera was released from jail on a $100,000 bail, with the requirements that she wear a GPS ankle monitor, remain in her home after 8 p.m., and avoid contact with the victim or schools.

She’s since violated those conditions on numerous occasions but remains free nonetheless.

Vera allegedly went to Stovall Middle School shortly after her release to work out on the track, then bought a new cell phone, both violations, KPRC reports.

She also violated her curfew over a visit to a local shopping center, returning home at 8:46 p.m.

Vera was back in court on Wednesday for another violation.

Vera told District Court Judge Michael McSpadden that she left her home after her curfew on Sunday because her drunk and belligerent brother was being abusive and forced her to leave. She said an off-duty Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy who lives next door advised her it was the best move at the time, the Chronicle reports.

“This is an abusive brother who didn’t want her there,” said Vera’s attorney, Ricardo Rodriguez. “She did not feel safe.”

McSpadden accepted the explanation and denied a request to revoke Vera’s bond.

“I don’t want you in danger,” he said.

Vera, who now works at a car wash, faces between 25 years and life in prison and is next scheduled to appear in court Nov. 16. In the meantime, she’s moving in with a friend, though she will be required to leave the residence when children visit, according to the news site.
