WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A Pennsylvania high school teacher was suspended indefinitely after she alleged showed students a video about masturbation.

School administrators allege a Coughlin High School science teacher showed a YouTube video on the “benefits of masturbation” to ninth-grade students as part of a science class last September, The Times-Tribune reports.

The video was not pornographic or how-to, but did include animation, solicitor Raymond Wendolowski told the news site.

“The video was not part of the prescribed curriculum, and parents were notified, Superintendent Benard S. Prevuznak said,” according to The Times-Tribune. “The administration will make a final decision on how to discipline the teacher, Wendolowski said.”

The solicitor said district officials contacted state and county agencies to report potential child abuse stemming from the incident. Media reports did not detail how school officials became aware of the video.

Officials refused to identify the teacher involved, citing privacy restrictions, but issued a statement on the teacher’s suspension Monday.

Numerous folks sounded off about the suspension online.

“Regardless of the subject matter, I always love when officials refuse to disclose relevant information by stating it is a personnel matter,” fed_up_one posted to Citizens Voice. “Sorry but if the person was suspended for calling in sick when they were not or skipped mandatory training, I could MAYBE agree. Misconduct in the classroom affecting dozens of children IS NOT A PERSONNEL MATTER.”

Others took the opportunity to make light of the situation.

“Don’t worry,” marathonrunnerchris commented. “Word will soon leak out (no pun intended) as to which teacher was deviating (no pun intended) from the prescribed curriculum. Maybe this teacher had Mr. Stahl as a mentor who suggested ways to grab the students’ interest (no pun intended) and get them to perform better (no pun intended) in the classroom.”
