DETROIT – Former Southfield Public Schools teacher Yvonne Lemmons believes she was fired for refusing to organize a Valentine’s Day party for her class because it’s her religion as a Jahovah’s Witness.

Now the 56-year-old Detroit woman is suing the school district in federal court alleging religious discrimination, Mlive reports.

The lawsuit contends Lemmons had taught at MacArthur University Academy for a decade when the school’s principal approached her two days before Valentine’s in 2014 and asked her to throw a party for her students. Parents organized the party in the past.

The lawsuit states Lemmons told the principal “her faith prohibits the observance of St. Valentine’s Day and her requested organization of the party celebrating same would violate the tenet of her religion,” according to the news site.

“Defendant rejected all the Plaintiff’s suggestions that would have permitted students to have a holiday celebration without Plaintiff violating her religious beliefs,” the lawsuit read.

Lemmons called in on Valentine’s Day and didn’t report for work, and was laid off a few months later.

The teacher filed a discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the agency found “reasonable cause” she was discriminated against and approved her right to sue in October 2015. Lemmons filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on Jan. 4, MLive reports.

“She’s really a good woman devoted to teaching students,” Lemmons’ attorney, Kathy Bogas, told the news site. “Her abilities were never questioned until she challenged this directive.”

Southfield Public Schools spokeswoman Jacqueline Robinson refused to discuss the case with MLive.

Lemmons now teaches at a charter school, Bogas said.

The lawsuit generated more than 1,100 comments on the MLive site.

“This is why we can’t have fun things anymore,” commenter Extinct wrote. “One person whines and they end up banning all parties.”

“Did they force Jewish and Muslim teachers to organize Halloween and Christmas parties?” 3sticks questioned.

“If you work for a school district (an arm of government) you must abide by their rules and policies. If you can’t follow them – for ANY reason – you resign – or you can be fired (laid off),” MaizeNBlue52 wrote. “As for so-called lawsuit, unless I miss my guess, she has no case and it will be dismissed as frivolous.”

“Indoctrinating our children into the religion of love? Blasphemy!” RawTruthForYou added. “Seriously … people take things a little too serious sometimes.”
