ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico middle school teacher Sharon Moran feels so threatened by her students she just quit her job.

Moran worked at Albuquerque’s McKinley Middle School, where she’s been continuously harassed and threatened by students to the point that she now fears for her safety, according to KOAT.com.

Most recently, a student threatened to kill the teacher and Moran didn’t appreciate how Albuquerque Public Schools officials handled the situation.

“I don’t think the administration responded correctly to the threat that was made,” Moran, 47, told the news site. “My family’s concerned for my safety, they worry about me and I think I did the right thing.”

Moran’s vacancy comes a little over a month after a 71-year-old special education teacher at the school was punched several times trying to break up a fight between two eighth grade students. That teacher, Vincent Criscuola, was also thrown against a wall during the incident, injuring his spine, neck and hip, the Daily Mail reports.

“I literally walked into a fight,” Criscuola told KOAT.

School officials would not discuss how the two students were disciplined, though at least one of them was removed from the teacher’s classroom, according to the news site.

Criscuola returned to class after recovering for several days.

“It just upsets me,” he said. “We’re here to teach and take care of these kids and watch out for their safety and I don’t feel safe there.”

Moran feels the same way, and she can’t take it any more.

“I feel like I’m being intimidated and I feel like I’m bullied,” Moran told KOAT.

“I had to kind of evaluate every day what kind of a situation I’m going into every day and whether or not I’m safe. My family is concerned for my safety,” she said. “They worry about me and I think I did the right thing.”

Moran, a Michigan State University grad, formally retired from Albuquerque Public Schools last week after 12 years as a teacher, according to the Daily Mail.

Many who commented about the Moran’s departure didn’t seem surprised.

“APS is once again in the gutter,” IHP posted to KOAT. “Teachers are not safe in the classroom! Why are the students allowed to stay?”

“McKinley has a horrible reputation for gang activity,” Bree commented. “A friend of mine used to teacher there but he left as the administration turns a blind eye on these students. It’s pathetic to walk into one of their classrooms and observe the chaos and disruption being caused by these untamed beings.”

Sara Bejarano suggested the district ship bad actors to a more disciplined school to straighten them out.

“I think New Mexico needs a school just or the troubled children. Texas has one which I admit I went (to) for a month and I never made trouble for my parents again,” she posted.

“I think New Mexico schools need to look into this just to straighten up some of these kids … just like a regular school but more strict.”
