NEW YORK CITY – History teacher Raemon Matthews is renowned for his teaching techniques at Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx. And now he’s infamous for the same reason.

Matthews was twice named “Teacher of the Year” and was praised by former U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige in 2002 for his use of multimedia and interdisciplinary lessons in the classroom, the Daily Mail reports.

Matthews, 57, is now better known for something else.

“An investigation by the New York City Department of Education found that Matthews intimidated a 17-year-old female student in 2008, engaging her in inappropriate activities including fondling her breasts and other private areas,” the newspaper reports.

Matthews, who had worked for the school district since 2000, pleaded guilty to sexual abuse this summer and was sentenced to a year of probation after an office cleaner found a CD containing explicit pictures of the student, including some of the girl posing inside a classroom storage cage, according to the Daily Mail.

Matthews was barred from returning to the classroom.

“A report from the special schools investigator reveals that the married teacher lured the student into closed-door photography and fondling sessions by telling her she was in danger of failing and needed extra help,” the Daily Mail reports.

“He would often offer students extra tutoring and stay late at the predominantly low-income, minority school.”

The victim told the New York Daily News she attempted to end the lurid sessions, but Matthews refused. She said she was scared he would hurt her.

“It was hard for me, it was like big trauma. I didn’t want anybody to know because I was embarrassed.”

Hopefully now this two-faced teacher can say the same thing.
