PLAQUEMINE, La. – Iberville Parish teacher Keavin Keith’s teacher profile says he “started from the bottom, and now I’m here” – a quote from rapper Drake.

But now, the former teacher of the year is back to the bottom.

“He used his position to gain access to these kids,” Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi told The Advocate.

Keith, 30, was arrested Tuesday on 30 counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student, as well as other felony charges, after a student who recently graduated told police she had a sexual relationship with the high school physics and geography teacher at Iberville’s Math, Science and Arts Academy.

Further investigation revealed Keith was also allegedly sexually involved with two current students – ages 15 and 16, WDAM reports.

The warrant for the teacher’s arrest stated he fathered a child with the first victim, a 15-year-old student.

Keith was released from jail on a $100,000 bond, but will not return to school any time soon. Officials placed him on unpaid administrative leave pending the conclusion of his criminal case.

“Please be assured that we will do everything we can to cooperate with police in this matter,” Iberville Parish’s Chief Academic Officer Elvis Cavalier told The Advocate. “The district is ready to carry out any actions that may be warranted as a result of these allegations.”

Officials named Keith as the school’s 2013 teacher of the year, and he represented the Academy in a regional teacher of the year competition, according to the news site.

Cavalier said the 2008 Louisiana State University graduate was an excellent teacher and his arrest came as a surprise.

“When the sheriff called me last night I was just devastated,” he told The Advocate. “His career is over now. I just can’t understand why he would do something like this.”

“The kids seemed to like him,” Cavalier told WDAM. “I considered Mr. Keith to be an asset to the school.”

Keith had worked in the parish school system for six years without issue, and has no prior arrests, officials said. His stepfather, David Keith, told The Advocate Keith hired an attorney, but declined to comment further.

Keith’s school profile states he is “very fortunate to be able to say that I look forward to work every day, and to challenging and equipping our future leaders,” according to the news site.

“P.S. this is no cliché; teenagers today are our leaders of tomorrow and are with the investment in time and energy to get them flying as high as possible,” the profile read.

Parents, of course, were troubled by Keith’s arrest, but at least one believes the incidents are an isolated occurrence.

“It was just one bad apple,” an unidentified parent told WDAM. “I’m not going to judge the whole school on one incident.”

Those who commented online were also dismissive of the allegations against Keith, with many making excuses for why he cross the student-teacher line.

“The temptation is much greater today as many of these young kids are very sexually active,” Julius Dooley posted to The Advocate. “These school teachers are sitting ducks. …

“This is nothing more than a reflection of the mess that is going on in our society today and it is likely much worse than we realize,” he wrote.

Others, like teacher Mark Hannie, were simply angry another male teacher is facing criminal charges for sexually abusing students.

“As an educator of 15 years, I cannot even convey how these incidents have eroded the trust of men in education. It angers me,” Hannie posted. “Problem is none of these dorks can get any play from real women they covet so they must victimize children whose minds are not yet fully developed. Hang em … and give me a raise.”
