WISE, Virginia – A Virginia teacher – and former union president – remains in the classroom after being indicted on one count of embezzling money from the teachers union.

theif blogElizabeth Ann Wade, a Wise County high school teacher, is accused of “misappropriating a little more than $10,000 from the (Wise County Education Association),” according to the Times News.

“At this point in time the (EHS) principal has related to me that Ann Wade has been a faithful employee for several years and we feel the best situation for Eastside High School is to keep her in the classroom,” district Superintendent Jeff Perry told the newspaper.

The school board reportedly has “leeway” involving teacher conduct.

“Basically the policy states we do have the ability to do a wide range of actions against any employee indicted for that particular allegation, but it doesn’t require we have to do anything,” Perry said.

So at this point, they’re doing nothing.

The indictment, handed down by a Wise County Grand Jury, is for “embezzling money or property belonging to the (Virginia Education Association’s) Cumberland Mountain UniServ (District 1) between May 18, 2010 and Oct. 2, 2012.”

The Times News reports that office “alerted the Virginia State Police late last year of concerns of possible irregularities in the group’s financial records relating to the WCEA.”

The newspaper lists Wade’s address, strangely, as a Post Office box.
