HOUSTON – A Fort Bend County Texas teacher faces “appropriate disciplinary action” after he gave students an eight-page handout titled “Islam/Radical Islam (Did You Know)” that drew the ire of Council on American-Islamic Relations.

CAIR contends a teacher working in the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District’s Foster High School recently assigned “virulently anti-Muslim materials” to students he clipped from an anti-Muslim website, the Houston Press reports.

CAIR highlighted several “offensive” passages from the assignment:

“Muhammad posed as a prophet. . .Both Jesus and Paul warned that after they were gone many false prophets would come. Muhammad is simply one of them. . .”

“Islam is more of an ideology than a religion. It is also an ideology of war. . .”

“[Islam forces] its ideology on cultures and ultimately on the world through propaganda, subversion, and even physical force when it is deemed necessary, one area of the world at a time.”

“You will either give into their demands recognizing Islam’s ‘noble’ rule, you will become a Muslim yourself, or you will die.”

“[Muslims believe] All governments – except Islam – should be overthrown.”

“. . .everyone will be brought under the yoke of Islam, willingly or unwillingly.”

“. . .even though generally Islamic followers will say that they ‘believe’ in Jesus and respect Him and the Bible, in fact, neither is really true.”

CAIR was contacted by the family of a Muslim student who received the lesson, but the group did not name the teacher or the website the materials originated from.

CAIR-Houston Executive Director Mustafaa Carroll called on district officials to take action because “only a strong response to this attempt at student indoctrination will send a message that our schools must never be incubators of hate,” according to the Houston Press.

Students, meanwhile, expressed mixed feelings about the assignment.

“No other teacher teaches like he does,” student Byron Randle told Click2Houston. “He wanted us to make our own opinion. Everything he gives us he wants us to make our own opinion. He’s like one of the most neutral guys I know.”

“He’s been open about accepting everything,” student Jason Paul said.

Daniel Hicks, another student in the class, wasn’t surprised the handout created controversy.

“It’s all up to the perspective of the student if you’re putting out information that could be misconstrued as politically unjust you got to expect a bit of blow back,” he said.

“I don’t think that is right,” classmate MacKenzie Baker told the news site. “I think he should have repercussions.”

Several parents and guardians seemed to agree with Baker.

“I don’t think it should have been passed out,” Foster grandmother Janie Pena told KHOU. “I think we should just let people do their religion thing.”

“I understand why there would be a problem with that,” parent Leo Conde said of the worksheet.

Other parents were upset district officials didn’t immediately inform parents of the situation.

“I’m kind of surprised that the district has not come out and said anything. Say something. Let us know what happened,” parent Trudy McDade, who supports the teacher, told Click2Houston.

District officials issued a brief statement that makes it clear teachers at Foster High School have very little leeway in the materials they’re authorized to present to students.

“We’re disappointed to learn one teacher made independent changes to a lesson plan, resulting in information being given that didn’t follow subject matter, or state and local curriculum plans.

“As soon as this issue was brought to our attention, the administration addressed the situation with the teacher,” LCISD officials wrote.

“Ensuring our students have access to factual information, given in the proper context, is a priority in our District,” the statement said. “Arbitrary curriculum decisions, which are clearly outside of the guidelines, won’t be tolerated.”
