HENRICO, Va. – Virginia math teacher Kenneth Johnson III has a thing for women’s shoes.

One Henrico resident told WTVR she caught him steeling her running shoes off her porch recently and confronted him about it. Johnson allegedly gave her shoes a big whiff before telling her he loved the smell and dashing off.

johnsonAnother woman reported to her neighborhood watch group that someone stole her shoes and later returned them with bodily fluids inside and a note that read stated the suspect is “a married man and his wife’s shoes did not have a smell and he liked performing perverted activity in the shoes and then returning them,” according to the news site.

In total, police contend at least four pairs of women’s shoes were stolen from porches and back doors of homes along Monument Avenue in Henrico County since September. The investigation eventually led Police to Johnson, a Varina High School math teacher, though officials won’t say exactly how, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

Police said Johnson, 31, would steal the shoes and replace them days later, sometimes with a personal deposit inside. Police would not discuss the “biological substance” left behind, but said it made it clear the crime was sexual.

“It does make us uncomfortable, but fortunately we are in a pretty close-knit neighborhood, people know and there are a lot of people who do not work who are here and if there is unusual activity the call the cops,” a local woman told WTVR. “It’s very odd, but there are a lot of odd people in this world, as we know.”

An unidentified local man said he was disappointed to learn the alleged culprit is a teacher.

“These are the people we entrust our kids to when we’re not around,” he said.

Students likely won’t be around Johnson much anymore.

Henrico County Public Schools spokesman told the Times-Dispatch Johnson is currently on paid leave.

He turned himself in to Henrico Jail West Saturday, where he was charged with four counts of unlawful removal of property, four counts of destruction of property, two counts of attempted larceny and one count of larceny, according to the news site.

A Henrico judge initially denied bond for Johnson, but her was later released after a bail appeal.

“Neither Johnson’s wife nor other family members appeared in court for his hearing early Monday. Johnson appeared via web cam and told the judge he had not been able to reach his family since his weekend arrest,” WTVR reports.

“The Varina High School teacher said he needed to reach them to help him hire a lawyer. The judge gave Johnson until February 1 to either hire a lawyer or have one appointed to him.”

The news station contacted Johnson’s wife, but she wasn’t interested in discussing her husband’s troubles.
