CAYCE, S.C. – A substitute teacher in South Carolina’s Lexington School District 2 faces criminal charges after police allege she brought a box of wine to work in her purse, then got so drunk she threw up and needed a wheelchair to haul her from the classroom.

Judith Elizabeth Richards-Gartee, 52, faces a charge of disorderly conduct after an episode on Friday at Brookland-Cayce High School, where she served as a substitute through the third-party Kelly Services, WIS reports.

School officials called a resource officer to Richards-Gartee’s classroom after she allegedly threw up on the floor in front of students, and the resource officer called the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department when he found the teacher too intoxicated to stand up.

“She had a box of wine in her bag that was opened, and students said she was consuming the wine during class,” according to the police report.

The report contends Ricahrds-Gartee was hauled to the nurse’s office in a wheelchair because she could not stand, and she was eventually transported to the hospital by emergency responders.

“On Friday, March 10, 2017, it was reported to the Administration of Brookland-Cayce School that a substitute teacher was behaving erratically and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol,” district officials wrote in a prepared statement cited by Fox 8.

“This substitute is not an employee of the District but works for Kelly Services. Kelly contracts with the District to provide substitute teachers,” the statement explained. “The Administration responded immediately, removing the substitute from the classroom and sending her to the School Resource Officer. The District has been advised that law enforcement has filed criminal charges against the Kelly employee.”

Most folks who commented about the incident online were clearly not impressed.
