GOODRICH, Mich. – What in the world is wrong with some teachers?

And how can the public support supposed “educators” who are openly cruel to their students?

Nicole Mcvey, a fifth-grade teacher in the Goodrich school district, is in the process of being fired from her job.

The school board started the termination process after learning that one of Mcvey’s students, an 11-year-old autistic boy, somehow got his head stuck in a classroom chair sometime in November.

Instead of helping the child, Mcvey allegedly chose to record the incident with her cell phone (presumably to show it to friends for entertainment purposes) while the rest of the class stood by.

According to a local news report from WNEM, which we assume was based on Mcvey’s video of the incident, “You can hear the teacher asking (the student) if he wants to get tasered and then the principal comes in referring to it not being an emergency. He resigned soon after.”

What could be worse than this? The fact that the public has rallied around Mcvey as she goes through the legally-prescribed tenure process in an effort to save her job.

As the news report put it, “…The incident happened in November and the community has rallied behind the teacher without seeing this video. At the Goodrich school board meeting (Monday night), parents continued to stick by her.

“We’re told the boy was stuck in the chair for roughly 10 to 15 minutes.”

What is wrong with the people of this town? Is their hated of handicapped children so strong that they are willing to tolerate such horrific abuse? What kind of parents are they? What sort of example are they setting for their children?

Thank goodness the school board had the decency to vote to fire Mcvey. We can only hope the board members stick to their guns despite the public pressure to reinstate the teacher, and the huge legal costs involved with any effort to fire any teacher, particularly one with tenure status.

Sadly, outrageous reports of teachers abusing students – particularly handicapped kids – are becoming more frequent these days. But how do we stop this sort of thing when parents and citizens are coldhearted enough to rally around the culprits?
