JACKSON, Mich. – Police allege former middle school teacher Jamee Hiatt repeatedly sexually assaulted a male student during the 2013-14 school year, and at one point attempted to adopt the child.

The 31-year-old married mother of two is now facing the potential of life in prison for criminal sexual conduct charges following her arraignment Monday, when Jackson County District Court Judge R. Darryl Mazur also barred her from contact with her own children, Mlive reports.

Mauzer stated that on or about May 1, 2014 through Jan. 22, 2016 Hiatt “engaged in sexual penetration” with a child between 13 and 16 years old, used her authoritative position to coerce the student into sexual acts, and served as a public school employee at the child’s school at the time.

“These multiple variables add up to the offense known as criminal sexual conduct in the first degree,” Mauzer said in a video of Hiatt’s arraignment posted to YouTube. “This is a felony, a capital offense in the state of Michigan. Conviction of this offense would result in a prison sentence up to life. It requires mandatory imprisonment if there is a conviction.”

Hiatt remained stoic through the arraignment, expressionless as the judge read the potential life sentence. Hiatt is also charged with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree, which carries a potential 15-year prison sentence, WILX reports.

Hiatt resigned from her teaching position at Woodworth Elementary School in Leslie last Thursday, and was arrested the next day, Jackson County Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Walker said.

Hiatt was a teacher at Leslie Middle School during the 2013-14 school year when, Walker told Mlive, Hiatt had sexual intercourse with the boy, now 14, on numerous occasions. Walker said Hiatt admitted to having sex with the child at least five times, but the boy told police it was every other day.

The victim said the abuse was happing every other day, including at Hiatt’s Grass Lake home.

Walker said Hiatt Hiatt tried to give the boy a cell phone, money, and “even went as far as filing guardianship over the victim” to keep their relationship going, according to Mlive.

It’s unclear what led police to Hiatt, but WILX reports she “was arrested following an unrelated investigation in Jackson.”

“She stands faced with some serious charges,” Walker told the court in requesting a significant bond.

“Hiatt said little during her arraignment Monday, answering yes or no to questions and to confirm she has two children under the age of seven and has been married for the past eight years,” Mlive reports.

“At the end of her arraignment, Mauzer barred Hiatt from having any contact with the victim, as well as from having contact with any minor, including her children.”

Mauzer set Hiatt’s bond at a quarter-million dollars.

Hiatt’s arrest and potential life sentence is already generating a lot of discussion online.

“I truly can’t figure out why teachers (of both genders) decide to put their professional and personal lives in jeopardy by having sexual contact with underage students. They are all pedophiles who happen to have college degrees that enable them to be in contact with juveniles,” onebigfan posted to the Mlive comments.

“She needs to be prosecuted like every other pedophile which is unfortunate for her spouse and her children because she is not the person her husband thought he was marrying and her children will grow up without her.”

“She is depraved, her children are better off not being around her for their safety at least until she is evaluated,” commenter “rs” wrote. “She above anyone else must understand this.”
