MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Multiple students at Highland Oaks Middle School in Memphis were suspended for three days for posting public information to Instagram.

On Friday, a student at the school posted the mugshot of eighth-grade teacher Tiffany Jackson, who was arrested for driving on a suspended license, Action News 5 reports.

Several more students reposed the picture, including Shanna Richardson’s son, and the Memphis mother doesn’t believe her son deserves the punishment.

“It’s public information, put it that way. You can see it on social media or you can see it in a magazine,” Richardson told the news site.

“My son went to her and talked to her to make her feel better, and explained how he deleted it,” she added. “He still got punished and that’s what makes me upset.”

Officials initially suspended three students involved for three days, citing the school’s policy against “inappropriate use of social media,” but later reversed their decision, according to WAFB.

“Because he re-posted it, he would have to be suspended for three days,” Richardson said.

She told the news site she’s angry because only three out of numerous students who re-posted the mugshot were disciplined, and she doesn’t believe posting publicly available documents should constitute a policy violation.

Many people who commented online thought the punishments were ridiculous.

“Inappropriate use of electronic media?” Mike Conlin questioned on Facebook. “First, who are they to decide what’s legal or not? And secondly, public information is just that, public …”

Shaun Wheeler said he believes school officials are the ones who deserve punishment, because they either didn’t know about the teacher’s arrest or didn’t inform parents.

“Who do you trust to keep up with this stuff? The school district? Or the parents and students? Who do you trust to tell the truth? Seems to me a couple school administrators need a few days off WITHOUT PAY to think about their careers for a bit,” Wheeler posted.

“Good opinion,” Richardson replied.

Others also express support for the Richardsons on Shanna Richardson’s Facebook page.

“Way to stand up for your son and force their hand!” Nikki Thomas posted.
