SPRING, Texas – Students at Klein Oaks High School are defying their principal’s demand not to wear camouflage clothes after a controversial photo of several student posing in the garb went viral online.

A photo of a large group of Klein Oak students dressed in camouflage with their middle fingers in the air in front of the high school on Friday was posed online with the caption “Redneck population … **** you if you don’t like us cause we re here to stay (sic),” KTRK reports.

Parent Tony Williams told the news site his son and others in the picture were simply excited about the election results.

“I don’t agree with the gestures that were on the photo, but as far as the camo, I support it 100 percent,” Williams said. “They’re Trump supporters, they’re patriots, totally excited about being Americans.”

The image upset some folks, and school officials deemed it inappropriate before taking action against the students.

“The school district says although no students were punished for that specific photo, the principal did ask students not to wear camouflage clothing the rest of the week, which is drawing mixed reactions from students,” according to the news site.

A district official told KTRK that students were not turned away when they showed up in camo on Tuesday. More than a dozen defied the principal’s order, while other students came to class in all black as a counter-protest.

“I just think it is kind of dumb … because I don’t think they should ban camo,” student Avery Davis said. “I think they should like talk to the students about it, try to make them take down the picture and … talk to them about it.”

Others had a different take.

“I thought it was really childish, they really didn’t have to do that, honestly,” student Brianna Castro said.

“There’s groups the feel like they’re privileged now, that they can say whatever they want, do whatever they want,” her mother, Luann Castro, added.

Parents and others also weighed in on the situation online.

ABC 13 Houston’s Facebook page reported that “Klein Oak High School students are split on a controversy involving camouflage, racism and the election of Donald J. Trump.”

“These kids were excited about Trump’s win. Big deal they wore camo, they wear camo almost everyday it does not make them racist,” parent Michelle Pollard Meese responded. “No I don’t think the finger was a good idea but they are kids.”

“ABC 13 was told by the school that no kids were punished and that’s a lie, one boy was suspended for three days,” Meese wrote. “These pictures were not meant to offend anyone they are friends who were happy about Trump and proud of their country ways.”

“Just give them detention for taking a picture making inappropriate gestures in front of the high school and posting them to social media. This is not a racism issue. Just pure decency and education issue,” Catalina Rodriguez added.
