SALISBURY, Md. – A sixth grader who famously cut off a rambling President Obama says his intentions were innocent enough: his classmates were ready for lunch!

“When he paused, I thought he was done,” Bennett Middle School student Osman Yahya tells WBOC.

“I honestly thought he was done. And so I’m like, ‘Okay, I think you’ve covered this question.’ And then when he said, ‘Oh, Osman thinks I talk too much,’ I was like, no, I’m just trying to get to the next question.

“We started late and the kids were really hungry.”

The event took place right before lunch and the students were patiently waiting to eat.

Osman says he friend called him a rebel because he “cut off the president.”

The sixth grader made headlines when Obama was giving a rambling answer about writing an essay.

“I think you’ve sort of covered everything about that question,” Osman told the president during their interview for Discovery Education.

“I didn’t mean to cut him off. I was just nudging him to get on,” the student told Politico after the incident.
