HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Numerous residents in Huntsville, Alabama want parents of students attending the Academy of Academics and Arts to know there’s legalized murder occurring across the street.

A group of protesters picketed outside of the Alabama Women’s Center across Sparkman Drive from the Academy Tuesday to reiterate their support for a failed bill that would have prevented abortion clinics from operating within 2,000 feet of a school, WAFF reports.

“It’s right across the street from an abortion clinic,” protester Major Fecteau told the news site. “That’s why we’re out here in the first place.”

Fecteau said the group toned down the graphic signs they usually display out of respect for parents and students at the Academy, but their message was clear: abortion clinics and schools don’t jibe.

“We decided that we wanted to use school-sensitive signs,” Fecteau said. “Just didn’t think it was appropriate to use some of our usual signs.”

Abortion clinic volunteer Josie Poland seemed upset protesters decided to voice their concerns as parents dropped their kids off for school.

“They’re usually not out here, this many in the morning,” Poland said. “But they are here because of the school people bringing their kids to school.”

Poland alleges it’s the protesters who are the problem, not the abortion clinic.

“Nobody would know what this place is if they were not out here,” she said.

The protest comes just weeks after the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress released videos showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetus tissue and organs for profit, though the abortion provider denies any wrongdoing.

“I want to be really clear: the allegation that Planned Parenthood profits in any way from tissue donation is not true,” Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards said in a video statement, according to WHNT 19.

On Monday, the U.S. Senate failed to move a bill forward that would have cut all federal funds to Planned Parenthood because of the video controversy, CNN reports.

According to Vox.com, Planned Parenthood received $528.4 million in federal grants and funding last year, about 40 percent of its $1.3 million annual budget.

This week’s protests in Huntsville follow similar events in recent weeks aimed at highlighting abortion providers in communities across the country. Last Tuesday, as lawmakers considered the legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, anti-abortion activists held a national Women Betrayed rally to show their support.

“We stand up and insist that every child is a unique and unrepeated gift of God,” one Huntsville protester said at last week’s event.

The alleged sale of unborn baby organs is “despicable and evil and it makes me very upset,” Moriah Phillips told WHNT 19. “We’ve known about this for a long time. It’s just now coming to light.”
