LEMON GROVE, Calif. – A school worker believed to be on drugs barricaded herself in her classroom with children and refused to let them leave. Scared by her bizarre behavior, the children alerted other teachers and it was only down hill from there.

Police say Linda Lira, a 31-year-old after-school assistant at the Lemon Grove Academy, was “acting bizarre” and after becoming frightened, students used a campus radio to call for help.

As the other employees attempted to intervene, Lira took off her clothes.

After barricading herself in the classroom again, she began “throwing things, toppling over desks and putting on and removing her clothes over and over again,” according to NBC 7.

School staff say she showed signs of being on narcotics or a hallucinogen.

“Staff briefly fought with Lira to gain access to the classroom and remove children from her reach,” San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Chris May says. “After students were evacuated, Lira exhibited multiple signs and symptoms of narcotics/hallucinogen use. While struggling with other school staff, Lira removed her own clothing as one act in a series of bizarre acts.”

The L.A. Times reports Lira was taken to a hospital for evaluation, then arrested and booked into the Las Colinas women’s jail on 14 counts of child endangerment and 14 counts of false imprisonment.

The school for 7th- and 8th-graders, had social workers and therapists on hand after the incident.
