PARKER, Colo. – A Colorado man faces criminal charges after police allege he pointed a handgun at a man at Iron Horse Elementary School during a dispute about a parking spot.

Police were called to the school around 3:25 p.m., shortly after two men got into a dispute over a parking spot and 31-year-old Wyatt Mayes pulled a handgun and pointed it at the other man before driving away, 9 News reports.

The school did not go into lockdown because Mayes left the school ground immediately after the altercation and was gone by the time officers arrived, according to the news site.

Mayes told Fox 31 he felt threatened by the other man, and wanted to protect his kids.

He was charged with menacing and unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds and booked into the Douglas County Detention Facility, according to the news site.

Parker Police on Wednesday issued a statement to families of Iron Horse Elementary.

“Safety is the top priority at Iron Horse Elementary and the Douglas County School District. As you may have noticed prior to dismissal today, we had an altercation involving two of our parents in the field near our mobile classrooms,” the statement read.

“The Parker Police Department responded and officers are actively investigating the incident. You may see media stories tonight regarding the incident.

“I am thankful no one was hurt and would like to remind all parents to respect one another during dismissal, as I know it is a busy time. Please also follow the parking lot procedures for dismissal. Please be patient as we end our school day with our focus on getting your children home in a safe manner.”

Several gun owners who commented on the altercation online were not impressed by Mayes’ alleged conduct.

“As a responsible gun owner I am offended … by this moron yet again paining people such as myself in a bad light,” Thomas Debaillon posted to Facebook. “He should have his gun taken away and be forced to undergo anger management classes. Maybe spend some time in jail too for a few months.”

Commentor Jason Wagner agreed.

“Dude needs some serious therapy,” Wagner wrote. “Probably shouldn’t be carrying a firearm if you have anger management issues.”

Tom Crist chalked the episode up to “just another responsible gun owner …,” but Greg Fuller quickly countered the misconceptions perpetuated by the media.

“You act like this is a common occurrence, Tom. There are 100 million responsible gun owners in America, and we have an anti-American (and historically ignorant) liberal media that hyper-dramatizes each and every negative occurrence involving a gun owner,” Fuller wrote.

“If this type of altercation happened all the time, there wouldn’t be enough time to read about them all.”

Others, like Matt Watson, poked fun at the situation.

“What’s the point of toting around a gun if it doesn’t get you better parking?” he questioned.

“You won best comment today,” Michael Fisher responded.
