WASHINGTON, D.C. – The six teachers who were killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting will be posthumously awarded the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal by President Barack Obama in a Friday morning ceremony at the White House.

The award represents the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, reports the Associated Press.

“The six to be honored include Rachel Davino, Dawn Hochsprung, Anne Marie Murphy, Lauren Rousseau, Mary Sherlach and Victoria Soto,” according to the AP.

Four other Newtown teachers and employees will be in the audience.

“Two of them, teacher Kristine Feda and custodian Rick Thorne, were in the school the morning of the Dec. 14 shootings, and their frantic efforts to warn others and to shepherd students to safety may have saved many other lives,” reports NewsTimes.com.

Feda is credited with moving students and staff from the school to a nearby firehouse.

Thorne is being honored for his quick action during Adam Lanza’s murderous rampage. The custodian reportedly “ran through the hallways during the shooting, locking open doors and clearing hallways,” NewsTimes.com reports.
