PHOENIX – A charter school teacher, David Depuydt, has pleaded guilty to sexual-assault charges stemming from a seven-month sexual relationship with the 15-year-old girl that included sex acts performed in a school bathroom, his classroom, the teacher’s car and at an apartment complex.

Depuydt was sentenced to 10 years in prison, placed on lifetime probation and forced to register as a sex offender, according to The Arizona Republic.

But the details that emerged from the girl’s lawsuit against the school shock the conscience.

“After the victim told Depuydt she believed she was pregnant, based upon the results of a home pregnancy test, Depuydt assaulted her in his classroom in an attempt to end the pregnancy, the suit says,” the paper reports.

While the Republic doesn’t get more specific, Courthouse News does.

“When she told Depuydt he had made her pregnant, and they were alone in his classroom, Doe claims, ‘for the purpose of performing an abortion, defendant Depuydt repeatedly inserted a metal ruler into Jane Doe until she began to bleed profusely,'” the news service reports.

Now, the girl’s family seeks punitive damages for civil rights violations, Title IX violations, negligence, negligent supervision, intentional infliction of emotional distress and loss of consortium, according to the suit.

“The charter school and its administration failed to take effective action to prevent the sexual harassment and sexual assault of Jane Doe by defendant Depuydt,” the complaint states.

“Depuydt utilized his inherent authority, trust and position as a teacher and community service project supervisor to target Jane Doe based on her gender and subject her to multiple instances of illegal sexual harassment and discrimination,” the lawsuit states, Courthouse News reports.

But according to the suit, the teacher wasn’t the only one that harassed the student.

“As the result of the knowledge that Jane Doe was the victim of sexual assault and rape, Jane Doe was subjected to an unrelenting stream of sexual comments, sexual jokes and sexual harassment” by fellow students, according to the lawsuit.

The student allegedly attempted suicide.
