LAWTEY, Fla. – Ten people were hospitalized, including seven elementary students, after a semi truck driver and his naked female passenger rammed into the rear end of a school bus in northern Florida.

The big rig was traveling on U.S. 301 near Lawtey at about 60 miles per hour when police said it crashed into the back of the bus, which was stopped with its cross arm and flashing lights out near North West 183rd Street around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, News4Jax.com reports.

“The Sheriff’s Office said the bus driver saw the semi coming in the rear-view mirror and sped up, which may have minimized the impact,” according to the news site.

“The bus driver was a hero,” Scott Korshewitz, a witness to the accident who stopped to help, told News4Jax. “We just did what we could for the kids.”

Police said a woman passenger in the semi was naked when they responded to the scene, and troopers covered her up with a towel. They did not reference why she had no clothes.

The Florida Highway Patrol reportedly received a call about a reckless driver in a big rig heading down U.S. 301, but could not catch the vehicle before the crash occurred. Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played into the accident, but distracted driving may have been a factor.

“Just to see kids in an accident like this on the bus,” Terrance Jamison, another witness, said. “I’m a truck driver myself, but safety is first. But there was no safety with what this driver was doing.”

Janice Crawford was waiting for her four children at the bus stop when the crash took place, and didn’t initially know they stayed after school for a Bible study. She said the truck driver never hit the brakes and pushed the bus 50 yards into a ditch when it collided.

Crawford called 911 and helped the children after the wreck, the news site reports.

“I saw blood. I was over there and going around the bus. My family, I was trying to see if my kids were in it,” she told News4Jax.

“I will never get over this incident, because I was standing there and the pieces flew over my head when the wreck happened,” she said. “I was standing there when he hit her right there. And I couldn’t even move. I couldn’t even move to get out of the way.”

Crawford’s children were safe, but their friends were not as lucky. One suffered a broken foot in the crash, she said.

“We want to see them, and we hope they’re OK,” Crawford’s daughter, Katelynn told the news site.

“I want to tell them I’ve always got their back,” her son Craig added.

Crawford told News4Jax the semi driver deserves to lose his license for negligence.

“I’m glad everyone is OK, but does he know what he could have done today? Does he have any idea of what he could have done today?” she questioned. “You know, he doesn’t even need a driver’s license.”

Neither the driver of the semi or his passenger were immediately identified by police, and that seemed to really infuriate many who read the story online.

“The public deserves to know who almost killed a bunch of our children,” posted mustafamaximus. “Show us their pictures.”

“Driver needs to go to prison. Period,” BB wrote.

Others believed parents of those on the bus should commend the bus driver for doing what they could to minimize the damage.

“I hope they recognize and reward the bus driver,” wlt911 posted. “If nothing else, the parents of the kids on the bus should show appreciation for the quick thinking that possibly saved their kids’ lives.”
