MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa – An Iowa teacher was arrested for public intoxication on school property this week while a local police officer was in the building for DARE anti-drug and alcohol classes.

“The irony is not lost,” Marshall County Chief Deputy Steve Hoffman told KCCI.

Police arrested Carissa Bryant, 33, at Lenihan Intermediate School Wednesday after a coworker told officials she appeared intoxicated and an officer at Lenihan for DARE classes administered sobriety tests.

“The deputy detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath, bloodshot and watery eyes and slurring of her words,” Hoffman told the Times-Republican.

A blood alcohol test administered at the jail registered .19, or “more than double” the legal limit to drive in Iowa, Hoffman said.

“Hoffman said based on a blood alcohol measure alone, law enforcement is unable to determine whether Bryant consumed alcohol prior to arriving at Lenihan or on the grounds during the school day,” though no alcohol was recovered at the school, according to the Times-Republican.

Bryant allegedly told police she was drinking prior to the school day, WHOTV reports.

Hoffman told KCCI the case was referred to the Marshall County Attorney’s Office, and more charges could follow if authorities believe she would have been unable to guide students in an emergency.

“That’s going to play a significant affect, and I think ultimately the determination of Marshall County Attorney if they believe a charge of child endangerment is warranted or not,” Hoffman said.

Bryant, a married mother of one, was later released from jail on a $300 bond and remains on administrative leave while the case is pending, the Daily Mail reports.

The Marshalltown School District refused to comment to the media on the incident.

The episode comes just weeks after a kindergarten teacher in Ankeny was arrested for public intoxication and child endangerment when she was busted for allegedly drinking beers during a class Valentine’s Day party with students and parents.

A parent who came to help out with the party complained to East Elementary School officials that Jennifer L. Rich was drinking on the job, and the school called police. Officers allegedly found two empty beer cans and four full cans in Rich’s leather carry bag, The Des Moines Register reports.

Rich resigned the following Monday.

Rich allegedly blew a .145 in a preliminary blood-alcohol test and was charged with public intoxication and child endangerment, but the latter charge was eventually dropped, according to the Huffington Post.

Hoffman referenced that case in an interview with the Times-Republican, but noted that “a fairly significant distinction between the two events are the ages of the students involved.”

“The sixth graders are presumably 12 years old, which means their heightened ability to care for themselves will be considered when determining whether they were exposed to danger, Hoffman explained.”
