ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Friday was Jamie LaQuian’s last day as building manager of Westgate Elementary School.

The 64-year-old died after suffering a heart attack while attempting to break up a fight between students, Fox 13 reports.

“Two kids had some sort of fight at school. He tried to help another teacher at school … try to break it off,” LaQuian’s daughter, Francesca Dave, told the news site Tuesday. “I’m not blaming anybody. I want to, but I’m not because this was his job. That’s what he wanted to do.”

Surveillance video from Westgate’s cafeteria shows LaQuian collapse just after the two fighting students were escorted from the lunch room. Dave told Fox 13 he has an existing heart condition that likely was aggravated by the school brawl.

LaQuian, an immigrant from the Philippines and father of five who worked at the school for 15 years, was rushed to the hospital Friday, but did not pass away until Sunday.

“He was a very loving man,” Dave said. “He loved his grandchildren, he provided for us.”

Westgate Elementary School teacher Margaret Goodwin said she’ll remember LaQuian fondly.

“He had a really strong can-do attitude,” she said. “Boundless energy.”

“He truly was part of our family and he will be very, very much missed,” Goodwin said.

Dave said she’s proud of the legacy her father left behind.

“I feel like he lived a good life knowing he was loved not just by his family, but by his co-workers,” she said.

LaQuian’s family is holding a wake on Thursday, with his funeral scheduled for Friday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in St. Petersburg, according to the news site.

The Fox 13 story on LaQuian’s death was shared well over 600 times and prompted hundreds of comments on Facebook.

“So sad and I would hope that those children realize now while they are young that some things they do in life have great consequences,” Denay Howard wrote. “God bless all of his family and the two school children that were fighting.”

“May this good man R.I.P. passing away doing what you loved. God Bless his family,” Becky Sue Robinson posted. “I will add that the only thing I hope is that the parents of these children need to share this with their children. This is what hatred does.”

“Both our boys attended Westgate Elementary. When we told what had happened our family was shocked. Mr. Jamie devoted his life to the school. He was always there setting up for school carnivals, programs and making sure the school looked beautiful,” Tara Harris wrote. “My son came to me yesterday, who is now a 9th grader to tell me Mr. Jamie went to heaven. To see his sad face shows what an impact he had on our children. Our love and prayers go out to his family. Thank you for sharing this kind man with the Westgate family.”

LaQuian’s family also expressed gratitude for the many kind words posted about the longtime building manager.

“On behalf of my family, thank you all for the pouring of love and support from all of the people here,” John LaQuian posted. “My dad was very loved by all. Like my sister said in the video, we want to blame someone but we’re not because it could have happened to anyone that is just trying to help.

“Just keep my dad and our family in your thoughts and prayers,” he wrote. “Thank you all!”
