KILLEN, Ala. – Parents in Alabama are complaining that their kids were denied lunch at school this week, and district officials are denying the allegations.

One unidentified parent wrote in an email to WHNT that “96 students at Brooks High School had their lunches taken away and thrown in the trash.”

Another parent, Shane Tanner, confirmed his daughter was denied lunch Monday over an unpaid $4 lunch tab, but school officials deny dumping lunches.

“When students came through the lunch line if they carried a balance on their charge lunch account, they were asked to go to the office to speak to an administrator about charging again,” superintendent Jennifer Gray told WHNT.

“At no time will we refuse a lunch to any student, that’s just something we will not condone.”

The superintendent also told the news site that school administrators and cafeteria workers are forbidden from trashing students’ lunches.

Regardless of the details, it wouldn’t have been the first time school employees have snatched food away from students who carried an outstanding balance.

School lunch police seized and trashed Dominic Grant’s lunch at Dowagiac Union High School in 2014 over a $4.95 balance, despite his offer to pay $2 and bring the rest the next day, ABC News reported.

“It was really embarrassing, especially in front of the whole class,” Grant told the news site.

Mazon, a Jewish social justice organization, has documented similar practices in Minnesota schools. There’s also been other examples in New Jersey, Utah, and other states.

Parents in Killen, of course, were irate about the alleged lunch dump, and vented their frustrations on Facebook.

“It’s sad that inmates in jail and prison get three free meals a day paid by us taxpayers, but our kids are denied lunch at school!” Rianna Moon wrote.

“I don’t understand why they would make them throw it away?!! Either way they are losing food so why not let the children eat it?! No child should go hungry, especially at school. Prisoners eat FREE. Not saying they should go hungry either, but our tax dollars take care of them so why not feed a child?” Angel Malone questioned.

“This happened to one of my son’s friends and my son took it upon himself to charge it to his account. Now if a child knows not to let another child go hungry, then school officials should know too! This is sad!!”

“Making the kids go to the office and talk about charging more is so bogus. Sounds like an excuse. Feed the kids and then call the parents or send a letter home to them. Pulling these kids out of lunch to go to the office sends a signal that they’ve done something wrong. And that ain’t right,” Michael Freking wrote.

“I will assure you that this occurs. I was called from work in Decatur, Alabama because one of my five children at Brooks had to miss lunch due to MY oversight,” William McCutchen added. “Had to leave work to get her money for lunch. They would not work with me even a little bit – you want your child to eat … get us money.”
