MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Two white school security guards who tackled a pregnant black student are suing Shelby County Schools over their termination, alleging they were fired because they’re white.

Northwest Prep Academy guards Henry Todd and Richard Pinner contend that a pregnant 17-year-old student was eating a snack and mouthing off when they forced her to the ground in a 2013 incident caught on school security video, WBRC reports.

The video shows both officers restraining the student before one of them kicks her legs out from under her, which sent the girl to the ground face first. The altercation began when one of the officers grabbed the girl’s wrist as she attempted to get away, according to the New York Daily News.

“The officers said they used appropriate force, but were fired because they are white and the 17-year-old pregnant student they forced to the ground was black,” WBRC reports. “The student involved in the incident was issued a juvenile summons for her role in the altercation.”

The officers’ lawsuit went to trial this week, when a teacher testified that the school’s principal said, “If those white officers hurt my black babies, I’m going to have them fired,” according to the site.
