HOUSTON – Parents of several students at a Houston area junior high are outraged after their children came home with mock awards last week that they claim are offensive and racially insensitive.

A group of teachers reported passed out the mock end-of-year awards at a ceremony last Thursday at Anthony Aguirre Junior High in Channelview that district spokesman Mark Kramer called a “poor attempt to poke fun” at students that “wasn’t well thought out,” KPRC reports.

The students who received the awards were enrolled in an advanced learning and college prep program, and their parents were livid about the ordeal.

Student Sydney Caesar received “Most Likely to Blend in with White People,” while her seventh-grade classmate Lezeth Villanueva took home an award for “Most Likely to Become a Terrorist,” Fox 26 reports.

“I feel really bad for her because I saw her in class, she was really upset about it and she wouldn’t talk at all for the rest of the day,” Ceasar said of Villanueva.

Villanueva told KPRC about some of the other awards doled out to her classmates.

“Most likely to cry about every little thing, because (that student) is very emotional. … There was another one about this kid. His was kind of like a joke because all his friends would call him ‘Little homeless Indian,’” she said. “And (the teacher) told him, ‘Most Likely to Become Homeless in Guatemala.’”

Villanueva said her teachers thought her award about becoming a terrorist was hilarious, despite the fact that the ceremony came only one day after a deadly terrorist attack in Manchester, England.

“(The teacher) said she was scared to give out this award because she doesn’t know what might happened,” Villanueva said. “The teachers (laughed), too. There were four.”

Her mother, of course, wasn’t laughing.

“I was very upset and very mad when I saw the award,” Ena Hernandez, Villanueva’s mother, told The Washington Post. “I was surprised because my daughter has been doing well in the honors program.”

Cesar has not returned to class since the awards ceremony, and her mother, Latonya Robinson is calling on district officials to fire the teacher.

“For that child to either be called a terrorist or she’s not black enough, basically now the students are taking that and that’s her label for the rest of the school year,” Robinson told Fox 26. “Everyone doesn’t believe that this is real. But yes, this certificate shows this is real. This happened. And we have enough bullying as it is by other students, now it’s being done by a teacher.”

School officials told parents the teacher responsible for the offensive awards, Stacy Lockett, was suspended until the end of the school year – a one-day punishment.

School principal Eric Lathan reportedly apologized so some parents during a meeting at the school, and district officials issued a formal statement on the ordeal, as well.

“The Channelview ISD Administration would like to apologize for the insensitive and offensive fake mock awards that were given to students in a classroom,” the statement read. “Channelview ISD would like to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are not representative of the district’s vision, mission and educational goals for our students.

“The teachers involved in this matter have been disciplined according to district policy and the incident is still under investigation.”
