ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A pre-school Teacher of the Year winner in St. Louis may have to find a new job after school officials moved to terminate her over “minor” a dirty diaper incident.

About two weeks after earning the St. Louis Public School district’s Pre-K Teacher of the Year award in December, school officials moved to fire Wilkinson Early Childhood Center teacher Kelly Hahn over an incident involving a 3-year-old who came to school with a pull-up diaper, which is against the school’s rules, Fox2Now reports.

Instead of changing the diaper right away, Hahn left it on and immediately called the child’s parents. Another staffer at the school called the Missouri Department of Family Services about the incident, which investigated and found no signs of neglect.

But St. Louis superintendent Kelvin Adams told the news site the district uses a different set of standards, then declined to elaborate on Hahn’s situation, the Daily Mail reports.

“That’s the handcuffs that we have relating to personnel, we cannot discuss specific personnel issues,” Adams told Fox2Now.

Parents of Hahn’s students, however, had plenty to say.

“She’s one of those people that I would say is the glue that holds Wilkinson together,” PTO president Dana Evans told KMOV.

Parent T.J. Gilmor, father of two sons were taught by Hahn, agreed.

“It is mind-blowing, actually. My wife and I are both enraged by the whole situation,” Gilmor told the news site. “She is a fabulous teacher. We couldn’t speak more highly of her.”

Even the mother of the child who came to school with the dirty diaper, Cynthia West, is defending the teacher.

“Regardless of the policy, what happened is so minor that it couldn’t possibly warrant incriminating a fabulous teacher,” West told Fox2Now.

The Daily Mail reports parents at the school are concerned because the substitute replacement isn’t a certified teacher, and they’re demanding Hahn’s reinstatement.

Parents have sent more than 100 emails to school officials to urge them to reconsider the teacher’s termination.

“I just want what’s best for her, what’s best for my kids,” parent Sue Gilmor said. “And what’s best for him is having his teacher back. She loves those kids, and there’s no substitute for that.”

Hahn is scheduled for a hearing on her termination on March 4, Fox2Now reports.
