SOUTHINGTON, Conn. – School officials say a disturbing pattern of behavior led them to remove a teacher from the classroom under suspicion he was intoxicated.

The school says it pulled John Hansen from class after “acting in an unprofessional manner,” but documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act indicate that explanation is a bit of an understatement.

The Hartford Courant reports the Spanish teacher was caught on surveillance video “veering in the hallway and bumping into lockers as he entered the school.”

He was also allegedly “roughhousing with students during the Pledge of Allegiance.”

First period students say Hansen was slurring his words and by second period, his face was “noticeably red,” and he had “trouble walking and he was muttering profanity, swearing at students, repeating himself and writing illegibly on the chalkboard.”

The teacher’s actions “freaked out” students.

Hansen was pulled out of the class and replaced by another teacher.

The paper reports Hansen told police he drank “a bottle” of vodka the night before but not that morning and that he “did not feel drunk at school.”

He allegedly failed a breathalyzer test at a medical clinic a short time later.

The teacher is reportedly still employed and is on paid leave.

According to the Record-Journal, Hansen was in a rehabilitation facility for a month after the incident.

“You can be assured that we will take all steps to provide a safe and productive learning environment for all students,” Principal Martin Semmel says, according to the paper. “Please be advised that we are sensitive to the impact this has had on your children, our students, and we have many resources available for them if they wish to talk about this further.”

Hansen makes $82,600 a year.
