ELKHART, Ind. – An Indiana high school teacher’s aide was canned after she sent out a threatening tweet during the height of the debate about the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Concord High School assistant coach Jess Dooley posted a message on Twitter April 1:

“Who’s going to Walkerton, IN to burn down #memoriespizza w me? Agree with #FreedomofReligion bill? ‘That’s a lifestyle they CHOOSE’ Ignorant”

On Monday, the Concord Community Schools board of directors voted to terminate its contract with Dooley because “the promotion of harmful, illegal activity … by a lay coach is unacceptable,” superintendent Wayne Stubbs said in a statement quoted by the South Bend Tribune.

“She has learned a difficult lesson concerning the incorrect use of electronic communications,” he said.

Dooley attacked Memories Pizza because owner Crystal O’Connor told ABC 57 she wouldn’t cater a same-sex wedding, a right that is protected by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, The Elkhart Truth reports.

“If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no,” O’Connor told ABC 57. “We are a Christian establishment.”

O’Connor said she agreed with the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and doesn’t view it as permitting discrimination.

“I don’t think it’s targeting gays. I don’t think it’s discrimination,” she said. “It’s supposed to help people that have a religious belief.”

Crystal’s father, Kevin O’Connor, elaborated further.

“That lifestyle is something they choose. I choose to be heterosexual. They choose to be homosexual,” he said. “Why should I be beat over the head to go along with something they choose?”

The family told ABC 57 they would never deny service to a gay couple or family of a different religion, they just don’t condone gay marriages.

The South Bend Tribune reports that Dooley’s tweet was among numerous threats made against the pizza establishment for the owners’ remarks, which prompted the shop to shut down and police to increase patrols, The Elkhart Truth reports.

The O’Connors’ remarks were also covered by Glenn Beck, who set up a GoFundMe crowdfunding page through his station, TheBlaze TV. The store reopened April 10 with an $842,000 boost to its account, according to the New York Daily News.

Prosecutors initially declined to file charges against Dooley for her threatening tweet, but are reconsidering pending the continued investigation. A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office told the South Bend Tribune a decision is expected this week.

Superintendent Stubbs said in the statement that Dooley is not a licensed teacher, but works as an aide at Concord Intermediate School and is employed by Goshen Community Schools.

She’s suspended from Goshen schools, he said.

“Whether you agree or disagree with what was said by the pizza place, what Jess Dooley was trying to do is a crime and she should be charged with it,” Mishawaka, Indiana resident Deb Markin Johnson posted to Facebook. “I’m glad that she has been terminated.”

“Seriously glad this woman got fired,” Devin Garcia added.

Even people who don’t agree with the O’Connors think Dooley went off the deep end.

“As much as I am against the new ‘law’ and as stupid as what the pizza pukes said, she should have never threatened to burn the place down,” Maralee Yaste Hertel wrote. “She’s too stupid to be coaching kids in anything and deserves to be fired.”
