BELMONT, Mass. – While some schools consider teaching masturbation to 5-year-olds, others deem a Christmas tree “questionable material.”

The Butler Elementary School PTA in Belmont, Massachusetts makes an annual trip to the Nutcracker ballet, but this year, some parents complained the show has portions that some viewers may find offensive.

“The trip to see the famous ballet has been a tradition at the school for years, but apparently some felt the trip was improper because there is a Christmas tree on the stage,” WHDH reports.

At the PTA meeting, parents were supposedly told they were being “discriminatory” if they supported their children attending the production.

The PTA “secretly” canceled the trip.

“I went once as a kid as well. I think it’s anybody’s choice. They should still offer it but you don’t have to go if you don’t like,” parent Adam Campana tells the news station.

PTA co-president Barbara Bulfoni says, “In the past years there were parents complaints as ‘The Nutcracker’ has a religious content. I think we clarified with the parents.”

One group board member is reportedly considering stepping down over the matter, but it wasn’t clear if it was because he or she really believes a Christmas tree is “questionable material” or because the controversy is so stupid.

The group ultimately reversed its decision and the children will attend the ballet.

Meanwhile, the Marshfield school district changed “Christmas vacation” to “holiday break” on the school calendar after a single person complained.

In response, residents collected petition signatures to force the school board to have a public meeting on the matter.

Twenty-five signatures are required to compel such a meeting. The residents collected over 4,000.

“We want more of a dialogue. We weren’t able to get feedback or thoughts from the committee on what we were trying to get across,” Elaine Taylor, the resident who spearheaded the petition said.

“Maybe then they would understand that the vote taken before was not in the best interest of the community.”
