COLUMBIA, S.C. – A South Carolina elementary school recently canceled an upcoming Father-Daughter Dance because some parents complained it was not “inclusive” enough.

The principal of Brockman Elementary in Forest Acres decided after consulting with the local Parent Teacher Organization to cancel the upcoming Father-Daughter Dance after some parents apparently felt it left some students out, presumably those without fathers, WIS reports.

A flyer for the dance – which has raised $2,000 for the PTO in the last five years – clearly states all are welcome to attend, but “there were a few parents that did not think the father-daughter dance was inclusive, when actually, it was at all times,” Richland One School District spokeswoman Karen York told the news site.

“It was never an event that was exclusive only to fathers and daughters,” she said. “Mothers and anyone else who wanted to show up at the dance were certainly welcome to attend.”

The Brockman PTO has already raised $1,000 with this year’s dance, but plans to refund the money now that the event is canceled, though school officials said they may go forward with the dance under another name, such as the Brockman Ball.

York made it clear it’s a minority of parents who complained about the annual tradition.

“Right now, the principal is in communication with those parents that raised concerns about the father-daughter dance, as well as the vast majority of the other parents at the school,” she said.

She said officials are hopeful that Brockman Elementary will host some sort of dance next week. The original Father-Daughter Dance was scheduled for May 13, WIS reports.

“There are father-daughter dances that are held at other schools, have been held at Richland One, and other districts here in Columbia, as well as across the country,” York said. “In this particular instance at Brockman, there were some parents, fewer than 10, who raised concerns about the father-daughter dance.”

“So again, they responded to that and the whole focus is to have a special occasion for all students and all parents, and we certainly hope that will take place next week,” she said.

WIS posted an informal poll on its website asking viewers to weigh in on the issue.

“Based on the facts at hand, do you think this father-daughter dance should have been canceled?” the poll questions.

In total, 93 percent of respondents voted “No,” while only 5 percent voted “yes.” Two percent voted “I don’t know.”

“Father daughter dances are an experience that allows fathers (or other important males) to show little girls how they should be treated on a night out,” Meggan Kristen posted to Facebook, drawing 232 “Likes” and dozens of replies.

“To the less than 10 parents that complained, you need to crawl back into the hold from which you crawled out of,” Paula Baughman wrote. “Father Daughter Dances are a tradition and if you don’t like it don’t go. Better yet attend it any way and for the love of God enjoy some time with our child instead of ruining stuff for others.”

“This is sad. It’s sad that we have gotten to these kind of days in our society. Nothing can happen anymore without someone getting offended,” Donnie Lucas added. “It’s a dance people, for fathers and daughters so that fathers can show their daughters how they should be treated.”

“Had my first father daughter dance this year,” Jon Williams posted. “If the joy and love in my daughter’s eyes are threatened to be taken away, I will be personally having that dance on the statehouse grounds.”
